Once the workers were moved from the ER to regular rooms, the families finally settled down. When lunchtime came, Daron checked in on the families and made sure everyone got something to eat.
Zara quietly slipped to Daron’s side, supporting him silently and working in perfect sync. Before Daron showed up, Marina had been the one leading things, but now she stepped back into the background and let others take over.
Garret noticed how clingy Zara was acting around Daron and frowned a little. He walked over to Marina. “Marina, there’s still a spot up front. You’ve had a tough day, go get something to eat,” Garret said gently.
Marina glanced at the time and replied in a mild tone, “I’ve got a lunch meeting with the Finley Group shareholders, so I won’t be eating here today.”
As she spoke, she shot a look at Daron standing among the families, her tone flat, showing no emotion. “Can you let him know for me?” she added.
Garret nodded gently. “Sure.”
With Garret’s response, Marina turned and walked away without hesitation. She left without a second thought, clearly not interested in impressing Daron at all.
Garret frowned slightly at the scene and looked up at Daron. There was Zara, standing right next to Daron, eagerly helping him serve drinks to the families.
Garret raised an eyebrow, a subtle look flickering in his eyes. He figured it was only natural for Zara to try to make a good impression in a situation like this.
When he first joined the Zamora Group, he was just as eager to make a name for himself. Back when he first joined the Zamora Group, Garret was always hustling for chances to prove himself.
Garret could get why Zara was trying so hard, but something just didn’t sit right with him. Honestly, it should’ve been Marina by Daron’s side, not Zara.
Garret quickly picked up on what was off and gently steered Zara away from the crowd. Zara, taken aside by Garret with some casual excuse, looked at him in total confusion.
“Garret, is something wrong?” Zara asked.
Garret looked up at her, his voice calm. “Zara, Daron’s married. Right now, you really shouldn’t be by his side,” he said.
Zara froze for a moment, her hands clenching slightly at her sides. She bit her lip, then looked up at Garret with an innocent expression.
“Carret, why not?” Zara asked, her voice tinged with confusion. “Did I do something wrong?” she added, looking genuinely
lost.
Garret was caught off guard by her response. For a moment, he couldn’t actually pinpoint anything Zara had done wrong Honestly, there was nothing wrong with Zara’s actions.
But given the situation, Zara really shouldn’t be pushing to stay so close to Daron right now. “You didn’t do anything wrong Garret said softly. “It’s just, at times like this, it should be Daron and Marina working together. We shouldn’t be stepping in and trying to take the spotlight.”
Zara bit down on her lip, trying to hold back her frustration, her voice sounding a little hurt. “Garret, do you have something against me? Or does it bother you that I’m trying so hard to prove myself?” she asked, sounding genuinely confused.

“Hayley took me in, but I’ve always felt like I’m just an outsider in the Zamora family. I know I don’t really belong, so I just want to do my part,” she said. “I can’t just sit around and freeload off the Zamora family,” Zara added, her voice a little defensive.
Garret just went silent. Seeing Zara’s eyes redden, Garret hesitated, not sure what to say to her. “Look, you didn’t do anything wrong. I just want to remind you, Daron’s married. We-”
Zara cut him off with a firm nod. “I know. I respect Ms. Finley just as much as you do. Did I do something to upset her today?” Zara asked, her voice tinged with worry.
“Did Ms. Finley say something to you when she was standing next to you just now, Garret?” Zara pressed, sounding a bit
anxious.
Garret listened to Zara’s rapid–fire questions and felt a headache coming on. He always thought of Zara as gentle and soft- spoken, but right now, she was suddenly coming off as a bit pushy.
Zara realized she was being too forward and quickly tried to explain herself.
“Garret, I really want to get along with Ms. Finley, so I’ve always tried to stay on her good side. If she had any issues with me and mentioned them to you just now, please tell me. I don’t want to make things awkward for Daron,” Zara said earnestly.
Garret looked at Zara’s sincere expression, hesitated for a few seconds, and then spoke softly, “Zara, I know your place in the Zamora family is a little tricky, so right now, it’s even more important not to get too close to Daron.”
Zara bit down on her lip so hard it turned pale. “Garret, I get it. So Ms. Finley doesn’t like me hanging around Daron, is that it? Is it because I’m just an adopted daughter, so Ms. Finley keeps her guard up around me?” Zara said, her voice trembling.
Garret was at a loss for words. “That’s not what I said at all, he thought.
When Marina spoke to him earlier, she hadn’t mentioned Zara at all. Garret hadn’t expected Zara to be so sensitive. Just from this short conversation, she’d already jumped to the conclusion that Marina didn’t like her and was wary of her.
“Zara, Marina didn’t say anything like that,” Garret said gently. “She-”
‘She didn’t even mention you,‘ he thought.
Zara cut him off before he could finish. “Garret, I get it. It makes sense that Marina doesn’t like me. From now on. I’ll just try to be invisible whenever Daron’s around.” As she spoke, Zara gently wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes.
Just then, Daron strode over. He shot a quick look at Zara, her head down as she wiped away her tears, then fixed his gaze on Garret and asked quietly, “What’s going on?”
Zara lifted her head, her eyes still red, but the vulnerability she’d shown Garret was gone. She spoke softly, ‘Daron, it’s nothing. Garret was just trying to teach me how to handle things. Guess I’m just a bit slow on the uptake
Garret was left speechless.
Daron shifted his gaze away, his tone cool and detached. Once you’re in the Zamora Group, the pressure’s only going to get tougher,” he said. “If you can’t even handle this, maybe you’re not cut out for the Zamora Group”
Hearing Daron’s stern words, Zara lowered her head, biting her lip hard Don’t worry, Daron. I’m not about something this minor,” Zara said, her voice determined.
give up over
“I’m going to do my best. I swear I won’t let you or mom down,” Zara said, her voice trembling with both hurt and stubborit determination. There was pain in her voice, but underneath it, a stubborn strength shone through.
Garret was left speechless. He couldn’t shake off a weird feeling as he sneaked a look at Zara. But Zara looked totally
