Chapter 448
Marina let out a soft, somewhat sorrowful hum in response to Daron’s words.
“I just think my sister is so pitiful,” she said.
Hearing this, Daron looked down at Marina in his arms.
Marina also lifted her head to meet his gaze, her eyes a little red from holding back tears.

“Honestly, I feel like any guy who wants to marry or date my sister shouldn’t be the type who can’t stay loyal, always chasing after something new even when they’ve got someone good right in front of them,” Marina said.
At the very least, he should have some class, she thought to herself. ‘Even if he doesn’t love Elnora, he should at least treat her politely.
‘Even in an arranged marriage, he should still consider his partner’s dignity, rather than completely disregarding his spouse’s feelings by openly flirting with an ex–girlfriend.
‘Zack is such a bastard, and Albert’s no good either.’
Just thinking about how Zack betrayed Elnora after all those years together, choosing Mila over Elnora just because the Finley Group ran into trouble, made Marina want to strangle him.
‘If it weren’t for Zack, Elnora wouldn’t be so pessimistic about marriage. Nor would she have rushed into marrying someone just for practical gain, Marina thought.
She said, “I know my sister. Back in the day, a man like Albert would have been completely beneath her notice.”
Hearing this, Daron pulled Marina even closer into his arms and said, “Maybe Albert’s not that bad.”
Daron had barely finished speaking when Marina shot him a glare and said in a low voice, “Of course, you guys always stick together.
“If he’s not a jerk, then he wouldn’t be making headlines with his scandals while my sister is still in the hospital.”
Seeing how pissed Marina was, Daron changed his tune right away. He nodded, showing he was totally on her side.
“Yeah, he really is a jerk,” he said.
Seeing Daron finally take her side, Marina gave a light snort and decided not to pursue the matter further.
They headed back to Vrufield from Port City that night.
By the time they got off the plane, it was way past midnight.
On the way back, Marina dozed off in Daron’s arms.
Upon arriving at the villa, just as Daron reached out to carry Marina out of the car, she opened her eyes.
Realizing what he was about to do, Marina quickly stopped him.
She said, “Your arm’s only just healed. The doctor said you shouldn’t push it. I can walk by myself”
But Daron didn’t let go. Instead, he picked her up in his arms, saying, “It’s my right arm that was hurt. My left’s still got plenty of strength. I can carry you with one hand.

Marina let out a surprised gasp as he lifted her so easily, instinctively throwing her arms around his neck.
Daron’s lips curled into a faint smile as he carried her inside, holding her with just one arm.
Belinda hadn’t gone to bed yet, and when she saw Daron carrying Marina in, her face broke into a broad smile.

Marina’s cheeks flushed as she realized Belinda would probably call Harris to report. She quickly buried her face in Daron’s chest, trying to hide her embarrassment.
Daron’s lips curled into a faint smile at her reaction.
Seeing Marina’s messy hair tucked against his chest like that, he just wanted to spoil her rotten.
He quickened his pace, carried her straight into the bedroom, and gently laid her on the bed.
The moment Marina hit the mattress, Daron was already leaning over her, caging her in with his body.
Before she could even react, Daron had already claimed her lips in a deep kiss.
The next morning, Daron was up bright and early, looking totally refreshed.
Meanwhile, Marina was lying in bed, utterly exhausted. The sound of Daron getting up stirred her awake, and she slowly opened her eyes to look at him.
Seeing her awake, Daron leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, his voice soft as he said, “Get some more sleep. I’m heading to the office.”
Marina nodded and said, “It’s not fair.”
Hearing that, Daron raised an eyebrow and asked, “What’s not fair?”
Marina grumbled, “Why is it that even though we both stayed up late together, you’re full of energy while I feel like I’ve been drained of all my vitality?”
Daron chuckled low at her words, a teasing glint in his eyes as he teased, “Guess I’ll try not to drain you so much tonight.”
Marina kicked at him, but Daron was quick. He caught her ankle and tucked her foot back under the covers. “Don’t catch a cold,” he said softly. “Now sleep.”
With that, he gently tousled her hair before heading to the bathroom to freshen up.
Marina was so tired that she didn’t even want to get out of bed. After Daron left, she dozed off for a while longer before inally getting up and making her way to the Finley Group.
Daron’s branch didn’t need her right now, and the Finley Group had plenty of things to keep her busy.
Since Elnora had settled in Port City and the Campbell family wasn’t letting her come back anytime soon, Marina had to hold down the fort at the Finley Group for her.
For the next few days, Marina and Daron were both caught up in their own work.
It wasn’t until the afternoon of Marina’s birthday that Daron showed up at the Finley Group to pick her up for dinner at the Zamora mansion.
That was when it finally hit Marina that today was her birthday.

At the Zamora mansion, Marina and Daron walked in together. To their surprise, Elnora was already there.

Albert was sitting next to Elnora, his right arm resting lightly around her waist, appearing modest as he chatted with Harris.
Zara sat demurely off to the side, quietly listening to their conversation.
Hayley occasionally exchanged a few words with Elnora.
When Marina walked in and saw Elnora, her eyes sparkled with delight.
“Elnora!” she called out.
Elnora gave her a nod and a bright smile.
Marina walked over and sat down beside Elnora, grabbing her hand as she asked, “Why didn’t you give me a heads up you were coming back?”
Elnora replied, “It’s your first birthday since you moved back to Vrufield. Of course, I had to be here with you.
“And since Albert happened to be free, he came along with me.”
Marina squeezed Elnora’s hand tightly, refusing to let go.
She could tell Elnora wasn’t being honest.
She was pretty sure Albert only came back because Reese had told him to.
‘But at least Albert came along, so Elnora didn’t have to make the trip back to Vrufield all by herself, Marina thought.
Bette and Durif were the last to arrive at the Zamora mansion.
The moment Durif stepped through the door, Harris was already up on his feet, grinning as he went over to greet Durif.
The butler moved to assist Durif, but was discreetly waved away.
He wouldn’t even accept the cane the butler tried to hand him.
Durif had always been in much better health than Harris all these years.
Harris didn’t want to appear old in front of Durif.
These two in–laws had been locked in a silent rivalry for years.
Harris was seriously annoyed when he heard that Durif had actually flown all the way to Frency to check on Daron after his accident.
During this time, Harris had even been quietly working out, all to build up his physique and avoid appearing weaker in front
of Durif.
Harris showed Durif to his seat.
“Uncle Durif, Hayley called out, getting up and walking over to Durif. She reached out to steady his arm, helping him sit down on the sofa.
After taking his seat, Durif quietly withdrew his arm from Hayley’s grasp. Without so much as a glance in her direction, he
continued his conversation with Harris.

Seeing that, Hayley bit her lip, a wave of resentment bubbling up inside her.
Durif ignoring her was basically embarrassing her in front of the whole Zamora family.
