Chapter 343

Dominic’s POV

The envelope sat on my desk, staring up at me as if in accusation.

I’d been looking at it for the past hour, trying to will it out of existence with sheer thought alone. Unfortunately, every time I opened my eyes, it was still there. Still waiting to be opened, revealing the damning contents that I knew were within.

“Are you going to open it?” my Beta, who had been sitting in the chair opposite my desk with his laptop open in front of him, finally said.

I didn’t answer. I already knew what was inside. Divorce papers. Ellie had made that clear at the funeral.

Truthfully, I didn’t want to open it at all. I wanted to tear it up and throw it in the trash, or better yet, into the fireplace where I could watch the papers curl up and disappear into smoke and ash.

But that wouldn’t change anything. Ellie had made her choice. Her face had been firmly set with conviction when she held out that envelope, and she hadn’t even looked back at me when she had left with Lucas.

Finally, I broke the seal and pulled out the papers.

The words were cold and clinical. Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. There were lines for signatures, dates, witness statements. Everything was neatly organized and labeled, like our entire relationship could be reduced to a series of checkboxes and legal jargon.

I scanned through it, grinding my jaw audibly. The terms were straightforward. No alimony. No division of assets. She wasn’t asking for anything except her freedom.

My chest ached.

“Well?” my Beta asked.

“It’s what it looks like,” I said.

Standing, he walked around the desk and peered over my shoulder. “So what are you going to do?”

“Fight it, obviously.” I threw the papers down on the desk. “There has to be some kind of loophole. Something to make her stay.”

My Beta shot me a sidelong glance that I felt even though I wasn’t looking at him. “Is that what you really think is best?” he asked. “Trying to force her to stay even though she doesn’t want to?”

I sighed, rubbing my hands over my face. The truth was, he was right. I’d tried to force Ellie to stay with me before –I had tried everything under the sun to repair our marriage, and she still left. It was like she had this idea of me in her head, like to her I was some kind of monster to run away from, and no amount of convincing could make her stop seeing me like that.

My Beta leaned against the edge of my desk, crossing his legs at the ankles, and folded his arms over his chest. ” You could let her go,” he said.

I pursed my lips and stared at the paperwork.

“I could,” I muttered.

“It would be the right thing to do.”

“Nothing feels ‘right’ about this.”

My Beta tilted his head. “But you respect her more than that.”

I did. And that was the problem. Because I knew, deep down beneath the primal part of me that wanted to latch onto her and make her stay regardless of what she wanted, that I cared about her too much to do that.

Ellie was her own person. She oculd make her own decisions. And I wasn’t about to be the monster she thought 1 was, forcing her to stick around when she had made it abundantly clear that she didn’t want that.

“Okay.” I picked up my pen. My hand shook. “Okay.”

My wolf snarled as I poised the pen over the page, trying to drag my hand back. He didn’t want to let her go. He wanted to fight for her, to track her down and drag her back home where she belonged. But I was tired of fighting. Tired of hurting her. Tired of watching her pull further and further away every time I tried to hold on.

Maybe the most difficult thing I could do, the thing that would prove I actually loved her, was to let her go.

It took all my willpower to fight my wolf, but I managed to bring the pen down to the page and signed my name.

The pen scratched across the paper, and with each stroke, I felt something inside of me break. When I was finished, I set the pen down and stared at my signature.

It was done.

My Beta walked over and picked up the papers. “I’ll make sure she gets these,” he said quietly.
