Chapter 344

I nodded, unable to speak. He headed for the door, pausing only briefly in the doorway to glance back at me, then left.

Once he was gone, I sat there alone for a long time in my office, staring at the empty desk where the papers had been. I wasn’t sure how long I stayed there. Long enough for the sun to start to fade and for my office to grow darker as night began to fall.

This felt like a mistake, and yet it was the only thing I could think of doing. Even if it broke my heart to let Ellie go, I had to have faith that she would see that I cared about her desires. That I wasn’t the monster she had somehow built up in her head.

Maybe then, she would consider coming back…

Just then, a knock at the door interrupted my thoughts.

“Come in,” I said, rubbing my eyes. They were dry and sore from staring at the same spot for Goddess-knows how long.

The door opened, and Vivian stepped inside, silhouetted against the light coming in from the hallway.

“It’s dark in here,” she said softly.

“Sorry.” I reached over to the lamp on my desk and turned it on. Vivian’s face was contorted, and her eyes were red and puffy. She’d been crying. She was still wearing the black dress she’d worn to the funeral, although the veil

was gone.

Vivian looked at me for a moment, mouth working silently, before she said quietly, “Your Beta told me…” She took a breath. “About the divorce.”

My teeth ground together. “Yeah.”

She took a step into the room. “Is this really the only way?”

“Seems like it,” I said.

Vivian sighed heavily, wiping at her wet eyes. “I’m sorry.”

“I thought you wanted us to get divorced,” I pointed out, studying her face closely. “All this time…”

Vivian quickly shook her head. “I didn’t think…” She sniffled. Her shoulders sagged. “I didn’t think she would leave like this.”

“Neither did I.”

“I lost my mother.” She drew in a shaky breath. “And now I’ve lost my sister too. Ellie won’t even look at me. She blames me for everything, even though I didn’t do anything wrong.”

I didn’t respond to that. I wasn’t sure what to even say.

“I just feel so alone,” Vivian continued. “I don’t have anyone left.”

She stood and walked around the desk, stopping in front of me. Before I could say anything, she wrapped her arms around me and buried her face in my chest, sobbing.

I froze.

For a moment, I didn’t know what to do. Then, slowly, I brought my arms up and wrapped them around her. It felt wrong. Uncomfortable. But she was grieving, and I couldn’t just push her away.

“It’s going to be okay,” I said. The words felt meaningless, because nothing felt “okay” right now, but I said them anyway because it felt like what I was supposed to say.

“Promise me I can stay here,” Vivian said, pulling back just enough to look up at me. Her fingers curled around my shirt, fisting it tightly. “Promise me you won’t make me leave the pack. I have nowhere else to go.’

“You can stay,” I said. “You’re still part of this pack. That hasn’t changed.”

She nodded and dropped her head against my chest again, sobbing quietly into my shirt.

As I stroked soothing circles across her back, I looked over her head, out the window. The sun was making its final/ descent behind the horizon, turning the grounds dark and quiet. Somewhere out there, Ellie was with Lucas, starting a new life without me.

I wondered if she was thinking about me. If she felt even a fraction of the pain I was feeling right now, but all I could hope was that she would come back one day. Maybe once she’d had time to grieve, to heal, she would realize that what we had was worth fighting for. That we were supposed to be together.

Maybe.

I looked out the window again, at the empty road leading away from the property, and let myself hope that that would be the case-even if it felt even more unlikely than the sun suddenly rising back up from the west.
