The gala filled the Volkov estate with crystal chandeliers and naked ambition.

Executives from Volkov Group mingled with politicians and social elites, their laughter polished to a mirror shine.

At the center of it all stood Andre Volkov.

Tailored black suit. Perfect cufflinks. A smile that said he’d already won.

He lifted a champagne flute.

“Tonight is an important night,” he announced smoothly. “We are officially introducing Arthur-my adopted son.”

Applause erupted.

Aurora Thorne stood at his side, Arthur nestled in her arms. She glowed beneath the chandelier light, fingers curled possessively around the boy. They looked like a portrait of domestic bliss.

Andre continued, his voice swelling with pride.

“We’re also incredibly proud to host a representative from our parent company. Their support tonight marks the moment this subsidiary truly comes into its own.”

Necks craned toward the entrance.

The double doors opened slowly.

Heels touched marble.

Arlo stepped in first, expression carved from ice. Behind him-

A woman in red.

The gown clung to her body like spilled wine, silk whispering over skin. Her hair fell in waves down her back. Diamonds glinted at her throat.

Andre strode forward, smile widening, hand extended.

“Please join me in welcoming our guest from HQ-”

The words died in his throat.

His eyes locked on mine.

“Seraphina?” Shock cracked through his voice. “What are you doing here?”

I flashed him a dangerous smile.

“What’s the matter, Andre? You don’t look happy to see me.”

His “charming host” mask shattered instantly.

“What the hell is this?” he hissed, leaning in so the guests wouldn’t hear. “This is a professional event, Seraphina, not one of your little tantrums. Get back to your room. Now.

Arlo stepped forward, his presence suddenly suffocating.

“Watch your tone. You are speaking to the heiress of the Renault Group.”

The heiress?

The entire ballroom went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop.

Aurora was the first to break the tension. She let out a sharp, mocking laugh.

“The heiress? God, Seraphina, give it a rest.” She looked at me like I was pathetic. “Is this your big plan to win Andre back? Hiring an actor to play bodyguard?”

She turned to Arlo, a smug, pitying smile on her lips. “Look, I don’t know what she’s paying you, but you’re making a fool of yourself. You should leave before security gets involved.”

A flash of fury crossed Arlo’s face.

“You’re out of line,” he said, his voice dropping an octave. “You have no idea who you’re talking to.”

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a heavy, matte-black business card. The gold-embossed Renault crest caught the light of the chandeliers, gleaming like a warning.

“I am Arlo, Chief of Staff to Chairman Vincent Renault. I am here on his direct orders to escort his daughter, Miss Seraphina Renault, home.”

Champagne glasses hovered midair. Every eye in the room shifted to me. Including Andre’s. Aurora’s lips parted. Her face turned paper white.

“No… that’s impossible…” she whispered. “She can’t be… If she were, why would she marry Andre?”

I walked forward, each step measured. The room parted for me without anyone realizing they were moving.

I stopped in the center of the hall.

“As the daughter of Renault Group’s chairman,” I said, my voice carrying effortlessly through the silence, “I am formally announcing-effective immediately-the headquarters will permanently withdraw all support and investment from this subsidiary.”

The words echoed.

Andre’s face went ashen.

Without headquarters backing them, Volkov Group’s subsidiary would lose its shield. Competitors would circle like sharks. There would be no fear of retaliation. No protection.

Just blood in the water.

“Seraphina…” Andre stammered, stepping toward me. “Stop this. I know you’re hurting after what happened at the clinic, but this isn’t the place. Let’s go home and figure this out together.”

I let out a dry laugh.

“You still think this is just a stunt?”

Around him, I could feel the shift.

The air in the room had shifted. I could feel it-the predatory gaze of the elite. The same people who had toasted his success minutes ago were now sizing him up, calculating the exact moment his corpse would hit the floor.

Everything he’d built on the Renault name-the status, the alliances, the borrowed power- was hemorrhaging in real time.

“No… this isn’t happening,” Andre stammered, his knees buckling. “Seraphina, stop. You’re hurt, I get it, but you love me. You’d never actually walk away. You can’t.”

Even now.

He actually thought this was a cry for attention. A fit of jealousy.

“Love you?” I let the word roll off my tongue like poison. “Do you really think I’d keep a cheating man?”

The music had long since stopped.

The only sound was his breathing-ragged, disbelieving.

I turned, the hem of my red silk gown sweeping the floor like a bloodstain.

And I walked out without looking back.
