Chapter 159
“My lady,” Dr Ahmad Singh came without hesitation.

He’s making sure I am well enough to assist him the way I used to back in the city. Everything he’s about to use has been provided by us, and I swept everything before allowing Aimee to bring the man in.
“If anything happens to him. You will have the most painfully drawn–out death I can come up with,” I say as we approach the
table.
“I took an oath,” he reminds me.
“You’ve taken a few of them. I’ve only taken one, and it’s this one. To him. Do you understand that?”
“You used to be a sweet girl,” he says, beginning his preparations.
“Am Lattracted more to you when you’re being a fucking psycho?” Ragnar grins when I go over to him. I roll my eyes and help him onto the operating table.
“It says a lot about you,” I try to smile back at him, but honestly, I’m finding it very hard to trust anyone. If I could do this myself, and I can, I would. But there are rules, and no one is above them. No matter how badly I want to be at the moment. “Dr Singh is one of the best surgeons closest to us.”
“Better than you?”
“Doubt it,” Aimee answers for me.
“I trust him to do this. You were lucky it didn’t hit anything vital. As soon as we get everything where it needs to be, you will be running your big mouth at court in a couple of days.”
“I trust you,” he winces when he reaches for me. I take his hand and hold it so he doesn’t flex his stomach.
“Relax. I’m going to be with you the entire time.”
“Does it hurt after?”
“It does, but with our accelerated healing, the pain shouldn’t last long.”
He stares at me for a while and then nods. When Singh informs me he’s ready to start, I turn on the gas mask.
“Count to ten?” he asks when I look down at him. I place the mask over his mouth and count to three.
“I just want you to know I hated that big ass fish tank. I’m glad it’s gone,” I laugh.
For a moment, I think he’s going to be stupid enough to fight the anaesthetic, but then he passes out. Dr Singh laughs as the two of us begin.
“I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you smile like that,” he says when I hand him a scalpel. I don’t know what to say, so I take the suction tube and a swab. “You could easily be doing this yourself.”
“Are you going to keep trying to get information out of me?” I ask him, annoyed.
“You were once my student, my lady. The most competent one I’ve ever taught. I didn’t think you would amount to much on the path you were on before this,” he admits. “I’m glad to see that things worked out for you. We both know that family was a disaster. A lot more people believe that than you think.”

“It was just more convenient to look the other way,” I scoff.

“Yes,” he nods, looking up at me. “The best thing that the city could have done was keep you out of it. Alpha Romano wasn’t always a greedy piece of shit. His father would be very disappointed in what his arrangement did to his legacy,” he continues to work. I watch his every move and assist him as best as I can. “Come,” he waves me closer. “This is always my favorite part.”
I lean in to see him finish the stitch and watch as Ragnar’s body reacts to the reconstruction, immediately starting to piece itself back together. I smile and step back to see him move to the sink to clean up. When he turns around to face me lets out a heavy sigh.
“Thank you,” I say sincerely.
“You know my story, my lady. All I lost. Pain is a part of our life, and we must learn to embrace it the same way we embrace everything else. It’s better said than done, I am afraid. But like that wound, you will heal, and you will be that much stronger for it.”
“It hardly seems fair,” I swallow the knot in my throat.
“Yes,” he chuckles. I must admit that I missed the old man. I hadn’t thought of him since I was dismissed from the hospital. “But a destiny like yours seems to be worthwhile. Thank you for having me, my Queen. I would like to inform you
that my family and I will remain loyal to you and your chosen for as long as you wish to have us.”
“Whoa,” Aimee says when he bows properly and excuses himself.
I clean myself up and step out to see my grandmother, the king, Ivar, and Kaylee waiting. I smile and let out a sigh of relief.
“We’re taking him up to his room. He will be dispatched as soon as the anaesthesia wears off. It was a very smooth procedure,” I hug King Baldr because the look on his face when he walked through those doors will haunt me.
“Thank you,” he says, rubbing my back and stepping back.
“Do we have any information on what the hell happened?” I ask.
“Yeah, the vampire king has been arrested along with his fucking spawn. They’re not going to get away with this.”
I am floored by the authority in his tone as he turns away. On instinct, I reach out to grab his wrist. He spins back, and I swear I almost piss myself from the look she gives me for putting my hand on him. I let go, and he immediately tries to take it back.
“It wasn’t them,” I manage to choke out despite the ice–cold feeling in my veins.
“Sophia-”
“It wasn’t,” I insist. He stands a little straighter and turns to look at my grandmother, as if to suggest she control me. “No, don’t look at her. She wasn’t even there. I was. You’re so quick to point your finger. No wonder you missed what has been sitting in front of you for decades, because James said it’s been going on longer than he’s been in charge. You don’t stop to think before you react, and that’s not a good quality for a king to have.”
“Because you know so much about being a King,” he growls at me.
“I know Ragnar, and I can tell you right now that he wouldn’t be jumping at an opportunity to start a fight with the vampires with everything going on. He is my King. I follow his lead, not yours. You can’t just accuse them of this. They wouldn’t be that stupid”
“You have been here two years, little girl. You don’t know these things the way I do.”
“You’re making a mistake. They’re in custody now because they want to be. Do not cross a line you’re not going to be able to

come back from. Ragnar is safe now. He’s going to be fine. I promise. But if you hurt her in any way, that thing is going to join forces with those wolves to spite you, and this will all turn very ugly, very fast,” I look at the others who simply avert their gazes. “Why aren’t any of you saying anything?”
“Sophia, the King was attacked. You were attacked. I don’t know if you know this, but you’re the fucking Queen of an entire race now. That girl was the last one in that room with you,” my grandmother glares at me.
“Neither of you is thinking straight, right now. What the hell are you even talking about? I know for a fact that Aurora didn’t put that bomb in there. I’m sure that bomb was placed there when my things were delivered to the castle.”
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” she growls. Ivar grabs her arm to keep her from coming at me. “You would rather believe that I put that in there over a fucking leech?”
“I didn’t say you did it. But that bomb was put there somewhere between your home and the castle. It doesn’t make sense that Aurora would place it there and then sleep comfortably in the next room.”
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I believe her,” Kaylee says. “It sounds insane, but she’s always been a good judge of character. I’m with the omega on this one.”
“No asked for your opinion,” Ivar growls at her. She flinches, but recovers just as quickly.
“Sir, you’d be making a big mistake,” I say, looking back at the King.
“You took a big hit today, Sophia,” he sighs. “Get some rest.”
“I agree,” my grandmother crosses her arms over her chest.
“So all that shit about me being family is just pretty words to paint over the same shit I had to endure from the Romanos,” I nod. The two of them flinch like I just slapped them across the face. I turn around to head over to Ragnar’s room. “Thank you for reminding me of that. Your son is in room two oh eight. In case you care more than picking a fight with the vampires.”
