Elnora’s eyes were icy as she glanced at Zack, showing nothing but a hint of disgust.
It wasn’t anything deep, just the kind of disgust you’d feel if you saw some drunk making a scene on the sidewalk.
Zack felt the sting of Elnora’s distant gaze. He clenched his jaw, his eyes reddened.
Zack said, “I don’t believe it.
“You’re just trying to get me to give up. You’re afraid the Campbell family will force you to pay them back, aren’t you?
“Elnora, that’s what it is, right? You’re scared the Campbell family will come after you for the money, so you’re rushing to break things off with me.”
Zack came up with the perfect reason to explain everything Elnora was doing now.
He just couldn’t accept that after all those years together, she could just drop it all. She must be struggling with something. There had to be a reason behind it.
Elnora frowned, feeling Zack’s unreasonable pestering was even more unbearable than usual.
‘Seriously, what was I thinking back then? How did I ever fall for him and agree to go out with him?’ Elnora wondered.
Elnora didn’t want to keep tangling with Zack anymore. It was like her words were wasted on him. He just refused to listen, and nothing she said ever got through.
She cast a sidelong glance at Albert and said quietly, “Come on, let’s go inside. Just ignore him.”
Albert looked at Elnora, his expression tangled and hard to read.
When Elnora saw he wasn’t budging, she took his wrist and led him into the Finley family’s house.
“I’ll take care of your injury later,” Elnora said.
Albert glanced at his wrist, still held by Elnora, and nodded slightly.
“Alright, sorry for the trouble,” he said.
Elnora responded naturally, “It’s no trouble.”
Albert just murmured “mm” and didn’t say anything else.
Zack just stood there, watching helplessly as Elnora led Albert into the Finley family’s house.
He tried to follow, but Daron stepped in front of him, blocking his way.

“She’s only being nice to Albert to win him over. She’s terrified the Campbell family will make her pay back the money, so she’s basically offering herself up.”
Daron stared at Zack, his face unreadable, and spoke in a low, serious voice, “If that’s the case, what can you really do for her?
“Zack, if you can’t get her out of this situation, then stop getting involved. Don’t make me look down on you.
“You want it all, but you’re not willing to give up anything. That’s not what a man should be like.”
Zack’s eyes suddenly brightened as he listened to Daron, and he blurted out, “I get it. I’ll start raising the money right away.
“Once I get the money and pay off the Campbell family for Elnora, they won’t have anything to hold over her, and she won’t have to marry Albert.”
Daron didn’t try to persuade him. He simply nodded and responded, “Fine. Go on.”
Given Zack’s limited resources and Evan’s attitude toward him, there was absolutely no way he could pull together that much cash anytime soon.
He’d be crushed long before the Campbell family even needed to get involved.
Zack didn’t leave right away. He turned to Daron, uncertainty flickering in his eyes, and asked, “Daron, will you help me?”
“Daron, will you help me?”
Daron shook his head.
“Zack, I’m a businessman. I don’t throw money away on things that won’t bring me anything in return.
“Besides, my wife would never let me hear the end of it. You’ll have to find another way.”
Zack knew deep down there was no way he could scrape together that much money in such a short time.
The hope that had just sparked inside him was crushed almost instantly, and he looked pretty miserable.
Seeing Zack finally quiet down, Daron wasn’t about to have any deep conversations with him.
Zack had just woken Marina Finley up from her sleep, so Daron had to go see how she was doing.

Zack stood alone at the entrance, lost in a daze.
When Mila arrived, she saw Zack crouched on the curb by the Finley family’s gate. His face was battered, with bruises and traces of blood.
He looked down-and-out, and his suit was dusty in patches.
Mila clenched her jaw and walked up to Zack, stopping right in front of him.
Zack looked up at Mila, a sarcastic grin spreading across his face.
“Mila, tell me, do you think all this is just payback for everything I’ve done?” he asked.
Mila frowned, her voice low and serious.
“No, this isn’t your karma. It’s mine,” she said.
Zack looked up at Mila and snorted sarcastically.
Mila clenched her jaw and grabbed Zack’s arm.
“Come home with me,” she said.
Zack snatched his arm away from Mila, his voice icy.
“I’m not going back with you,” he said.
“I just want to be with Elnora. Nowhere else matters to me.”
Mila bit down hard on her lip, her eyes filled with frustration and unwillingness.
“You want to run back to Elnora? But do you really think she’ll let you? You think she’ll take you back? Keep dreaming,” she shot back.
She had only just secured her place in the Gill family. There was no way she could let anything jeopardize her marriage now.
Even if she resented it, she had no choice but to grit her teeth and endure.
Zack was out of it, just staring off into space.
Seeing Zack like this, Mila swallowed her pride and spoke much more softly, her voice gentle and almost pleading.
“Zack, please… come home with me,” she said.
No matter what, Mila had to hold on to her marriage.

Zack pulled his arm away from Mila and walked off by himself, not even looking back.
He was mumbling under his breath, but nobody could tell what he was saying.
Mila let out a long sigh, feeling helpless, and had no choice but to trail behind him in her car.

Zack stubbornly refused to get in, wandering alone along the street. Sometimes, he’d act like a drunk, suddenly darting right into the middle of traffic.
Mila was terrified, and it took everything she had to drag him back to the side of the road.
Zack finally ran out of steam, his drunken antics spent and exhaustion hitting him hard. He flopped down on the grass by the road and was out like a light.
Mila looked at Zack sleeping on the grass and let her eyes fall shut for a moment.
She never thought her marriage would come to this.
She and Zack had only just gotten married.
She’d believed that once Zack broke things off with Elnora and married her, it would be the start of her happy ending.
But instead, it felt like she was standing at the edge of an abyss.
Mila practically exhausted herself getting Zack into the car.
When she finally slumped into the driver’s seat, she felt utterly drained.
She glanced back at Zack, sprawled out and dead to the world in the back seat, and tears slipped silently down her cheeks.
When Elnora called her to come pick up Zack, Mila felt like she’d never be able to hold her head up in front of Elnora again.
Elnora hadn’t said a single word to shame her, but Mila still felt deeply humiliated.
‘Elnora must be laughing at me right now,’ Mila thought bitterly.
‘She’s probably mocking me for taking Zack away, but not even being able to hold onto him.'”
Mila clenched her jaw in anger, seething with hatred.
She looked away from Zack sprawled out in the back seat, her mind filling up with venomous thoughts.
After all the mess Zack stirred up, Elnora’s marriage was pretty much ruined. There was no way she’d ever find happiness now.
Honestly, no guy would just let something like this slide.
Albert definitely won’t see Elnora the same way anymore.
