Chapter 2
He hung up. Tyler came over. “Who was that?”
“Aria.” Trent pocketed his phone, and his whole face lit up. “She’s flying out this afternoon and
says she has to lock down the certificate first. She was practically begging.”
Tyler raised an eyebrow. “So what about the wedding?”
“Relax.” Trent waved it off. “The ceremony’s gonna take forever. I’ll run to City Hall, it’s ten
minutes. You know how Aria is. If I don’t deal with her, she’ll actually start crying at the gate.”
Tyler knew better than to argue.
Trent walked over to me, slung an arm around my shoulder, and told the photographer to get a
shot.
“Come on. Take one for the road.”
Click. Done.
He checked his watch. “Alright, that’s it for now. Gotta go or I’ll miss the appointment.”
He spun around and headed for another car.
“Trent.” I stood there and called his name.
He stopped. Turned. That same easy arrogance was still written all over his face.
A
“If you leave today,” I said, each word deliberate, “I’m swapping grooms at this wedding.”
He blinked. Then he laughed, a mean, sure-of-himself laugh. “Swap grooms? With who? You think
life’s a movie?”
“Everyone in Port Ellis knows you’re mine.”
“I mean… if you can actually find someone stupid enough to marry you, I won’t stand in your
way…
He pulled open the car door and tossed one last line over his shoulder. “Don’t be dramatic, baby. Wait for me. I know what I’m doing with those side pieces. Okay?”
The groomsmen behind us just stared.

Tyler took a couple of steps after him. “Trent, you’re really leaving?”
“Hold the fort. I’ll be back.”
Trent shut the door, already sounding impatient. “That girl’s impossible to say no to. I don’t need
the headache.”
The engine roared. The car sped off.
I stood there, my veil lifting in the wind.
The photographer still had his camera up, frozen.
No one said a word.
I looked down at my bare left ring finger and slowly smiled.
Go ahead, Trent. Go get your certificate.
Because this multimilliondollar wedding of the century?
I’ll take it.
I lifted my gown and walked into the church.
Guests were seated. The officiant was in place. The wedding march was playing.
Everything was perfect, except the groom was gone.
Tyler caught up to me, forcing a grin. “Sloane, Trent just had a quick thing come up. He’ll be right back. Just hang tight for a minute.”
Carson jumped in too. “Yeah, seriously. Trent always comes through. He’ll be here.”
“Totally. The man doesn’t drop the ball on big stuff.”
They all talked over each other, making “the groom ran off” sound like he’d stepped out to grab the
mail.
I glanced at the clock at the front of the church. 10:40 AM.
“Okay,” I said. “I’ll wait.”
I sent them away without a fuss.

Tyler visibly relaxed and hurried to get someone to bring me water.
I’ll wait, alright.
But you won’t see who I’m really waiting for.
