Chapter 3

The wedding had been hyped for three full months.

All the important relatives from the groom’s side had shown up.

I looked around, taking in every detail.

The white rose waterfall by the floortoceiling windows. The crystal strands hanging from the dome.

Even the font on the place cards, he’d had a designer do that.

Trent did everything to the extreme.

That’s how he chased me. That’s how he planned this wedding.

He’d turned this into the talk of the city, the fantasy every woman dreamed of.

And of course, he cheated to the extreme too.

No room for negotiation. No explanation..

In his mind, being good to someone

And I only had one option: take it.

n had never been a contradiction.

Back in the bridal suite, my best friend and maid of honor Jenna Collins was holding my train, her

face burning with fury.

“Is Trent out of his mind? Going to marry someone else on his own wedding day? What the hell

is wrong with him?”

She flopped down next to me and yanked at her bridesmaid dress.

crap. I mean, even if… why today of all days?”

Her voice cracked with anger on my behalf.

“I thought he was just talking

“When you two were planning all this, he hit every flower shop in the city just to find the right bouquet for you. And when you tried on your dress? His eyes got all red. Like, worse than yours.”

“I was so jealous I wanted to throw up. I even punched my idiot boyfriend for being such a useless waste of space.”

She paused, her voice dropping. “Who knew he could turn around and do something like this?”

I didn’t answer. I scrolled through my phone.

Aria had just posted on Instagram.

The photo showed a man’s shirt and a woman’s lingerie scattered on the floor.

Caption: [He said ten minutes. Guess he couldn’t leave.]

She’d tagged the location. Not City Hall.

A mutual friend commented: [Aria, are you trying to kill someone?]

Aria replied: [Whoever’s waiting in a wedding dress with no groom, that’s who.]

I took a screenshot, my face blank.

“Sloane, stop waiting!” Jenna snatched my phone away. “Look at this garbage!”

“You came straight back from the UK after graduation for him. You know how pissed your parents were?”

“Back then Trent was nobody. And you still bet ten years of your life against your own family. Now you’ve lost it all.”

“If you hadn’t busted your ass for him, writing his proposals, bringing in investors, pulling your dad’s name behind the scenes, he’d still be a nobody. You built his whole company.”

“And now he’s hooking up with some investor’s daughter?”

“I never knew he could fake it that good. Hiding everything until the night before the wedding, and then making damn sure you walked in on him with someone else.”

Jenna was so mad her eyes were red. “Sloane, stop. It’s time to live for yourself.”

“Jenna… thank you for being here. After the wedding, I’ll go back to my parents and tell them I

lost.”

VA bet was a bet.

Today was the day I paid the price.

After calming my friend and myself, I headed to the terrace at the end of the hall for some air.

The moment I reached for the door, I heard male voices inside.

“So Trent’s really not coming back?”

“He said Aria’s stuck on him like glue. Told us to stall.”
