Sean took the file, glanced at it briefly, and set it on the coffee table. His dark eyes seemed to grow even deeper.
Tracy watched him cautiously. “Sean… you’re not going to stop investigating just because it’s the White family, are you?”
Sean looked at her, his expression unreadable. “Do you think I’m afraid of the White family?”
She quickly shook her head. “Of course not.”
She was afraid he would be pressured by his own family. Even if he wanted to help her, would the Johnson family allow it?
“I have to get back to the office.” Sean glanced at his watch, stood, and grabbed his jacket.
Watching his retreating back, Tracy suddenly felt uncertain. This man was too hard to read; she had no idea what he was thinking.
Without his help, she would have to do this alone. No matter how hard it was, she wouldn’t give

She sat back on the sofa, and her phone rang. It was Sam, his voice edged with worry.
“Tracy, I just heard from Mr. Waylon. The contract signing for Monday has been canceled. I asked him why, but he wouldn’t say much, only that we’ve offended someone powerful and the contract is ‘postponed.’ I’ve been thinking… the only people we’ve offended are the Xanders. But they don’t have that much power, do they?”
He had been stunned by the call. Waylon wouldn’t elaborate, so he couldn’t get to the bottom of it. But if the Xanders were powerful enough to do this, they would have scrubbed the internet of that embarrassing news long ago.
So who could it be?
Tracy’s voice was calm. “It’s fine. At most, they’ll just demand an investigation to see if I cheated. We didn’t do anything wrong. The truth will speak for itself; they won’t find anything. It’s just the last desperate struggle of a few clowns. You don’t need to worry.”
Sean hadn’t gone into detail, but she could easily guess the White family’s methods. This was all

they knew how to do. They wouldn’t dare do more, or they’d risk offending the Medical Al Department themselves. Cooperating with a national-level institute was a massive honor; that’s why so many companies were fighting for the chance. No matter how powerful a family was, they couldn’t control a government department’s decision. This was just a procedural delay.
Sam nodded in agreement. “Tracy, you’re right. You’ve got a good head on your shoulders. Still, the power behind the Xanders is not to be underestimated. Your relationship with them is so bad… I’m worried they’ll retaliate. You need to be careful.”
Regardless of the Xanders’ power, Tracy’s safety was what mattered. This move to postpone the contract was aimed squarely at her. He truly felt for her, having such a toxic, blind, and vicious family.
“Okay,” Tracy said. “Thanks for the warning. I’ll be careful.”
After discussing a few more work items, she hung up and flopped onto the sofa, staring at the ceiling as she thought.
Grandma thought that if I just stopped digging into the past, I’d be safe. But she didn’t realize that Yvonne and her mother would never leave me alone. As long as I threaten their interests, they’ll just run to the White family to eliminate the threat.
I wonder… how would Julie and her mother react if they found out about Yvonne and Faye?
At this thought, Tracy’s eyes lit up, shining like stars.
Tracy arranged to meet Natalie at a café. It had been a long time since they’d gone shopping.
She slept in until nine, got ready, and arrived at the café just before ten.
As she pushed open the door, her eyes were immediately drawn to a tall figure by the floor-to- ceiling window.
It was Sean. He was sitting across from an elegant, sophisticated woman. The two were laughing and talking, the picture of harmony.
The sight stung. Tracy’s first instinct was to flee, but just then, Natalie’s voice came from behind her.
“Tracy, why are you just standing there? Did you see an old ‘friend’ you didn’t want to run into?”
Caught like a voyeur, Tracy quickly looked away. She forced herself to stay calm and walked in. The air conditioning inside was a stark contrast to the boiling heat outside.
Natalie followed her in and also spotted Sean.
