Chapter 76 The Parent-Teacher Conference

Maya and Jenny had already planned it out-a full skip-day operation.

Then Jenny called and bailed at the last second.

“My mom’s coming back from overseas. If I skip, she’ll beat me to death.”

That was that. Maya had no backup plan.

At first, she’d been worried about running into Thomas and causing trouble for the family.

But now?

After finding out what her parents actually did, skipping school suddenly felt unnecessary.

Everything she’d suspected about Raymond had turned out to be true. The shock had passed. What replaced it was something else. Relief. And a strange kind of fearlessness.

“Alright, kids. Let’s go.”

Wendy grabbed Toby and ruffled his hair.

Since the elementary and middle school conferences didn’t line up, they split up.

Wendy left first with Toby. Maya and Alfred threw on their school jackets and ran downstairs hand in hand, too impatient to wait.

By the time Raymond finally dragged himself down, he saw Maya standing at the edge of the lawn, waving at him. “Dad, I think I stepped in poop!”

Raymond froze. Not a single person on earth wanted to hear that sentence.

There were a lot of pet owners in the building. The lawn was a minefield.

Raymond sighed, turned around, and went back upstairs to get her a clean pair of shoes.

When they finally headed out again, he already looked drained. To prevent anything else from happening, he bent down, scooped both kids up, one in each arm.

“You two,” he said, tired, “can you behave? And you too, Alfred.”

Alfred was usually quiet. But if Maya did something dumb, he’d follow her every time. At least they hadn’t both stepped in it. That would’ve broken him.

Alfred was usually quiet. But if Maya did something dumb, he’d follow her every time.

They walked through the school gates, passed multiple security checks, and made it inside. Raymond still carried both kids like it was nothing.

He looked down at Maya. “Where’s your classroom?”

“Not there. The meeting’s in another building.”

Chapter 76 The Parent Teacher Conference,

She pointed the way.

Inside the conference hall, they went through another round of checks. Raymond sighed again. He really couldn’t understand why his old crew would target a private school.

The people he used to work with, technically colleagues, were really just people who followed his lead.

He used to be the one calling the shots, laying out the plan while everyone else followed his lead. But he’d been out of that life for years.

Going after a private school made no sense. Too many variables, too messy to get out clean, and way too likely to draw national attention. Unless you were broke or had a very specific agenda, it wasn’t worth it.

But apparently, his old crew didn’t see it that way.

They just wanted to stir up chaos. Feed whatever twisted urge they had.

Raymond took in the campus, the manicured grounds, the expensive buildings. “I went to a school like this,” he said. “Mostly overseas.”

“How long were you abroad?” Maya asked, fiddling with the zipper on his jacket.

“Thirteen years.”

“That long?” She let out a small, impressed sound. “So after that, you graduated and came back?”

“No.” He paused. “After 13 years, I became an international fugitive.”

“…Wow.”

That was not the answer she expected. Actually, maybe it was.

Raymond adjusted his hold on them and sighed. “I really don’t like leaving the house.”

He preferred staying in. Quiet. Dark. No interruptions.

“If you don’t go outside, you’ll grow mold, Dad.”

Maya tilted her head up at him. Her eyes, in the sunlight, looked warm and golden. Soft.

Raymond just stared at her, looking completely disarmed by how cute she was. Something in his brain seemed to short out as a grin crept up, and he let out a few soft laughs.

Alfred looked at him, unimpressed. “That’s embarrassing.”

“You wouldn’t get it,” Raymond said, still smiling. “Even the coldest killer would crack a smile at a kid as cute as your sister.”

Carrying two kids, dressed in plain clothes, Raymond blended into the crowd of polished, well-dressed

parents.

Harmony International School wasn’t just for the rich. Plenty of top-performing kids got in on merit to keep the academic standards high.

Chapter 76 The Parent Teacher Conference

Finished

Which meant someone like Raymond, in the eyes of certain polished, success-driven parents, wasn’t even worth a second look, let alone getting to know.

This time, the international program and the advanced program were holding a joint conference.

The agenda was simple on the surface. Recognize the students who scored full marks.
