Chapter 75 After the Truth Comes Out

Raymond gave her check a light squeeze, then took Wendy’s hand and led her away, leaving the three kids in the living room.

…Wow.

Maya felt like her day had been a lot.

First, her corporate-drone dad casually revealed his real job. Then the first gift he ever gave her was a gun.

Once the bedroom door closed behind their parents, the room went quiet for a beat.

Maya sat in the middle of the couch, deep in thought. The three of them leaned in close, heads nearly touching, like this was some serious strategy meeting.

Toby spoke first. “I’ve been waiting to see your reaction when you found out what they do.”

He spun the little handgun in his hand. “Kinda disappointed. You already guessed, didn’t you?”

“Yeah.” Maya covered her eyes. “I had suspicions. Just never saw proof, I mean… the way he acts…”

It didn’t match.

Raymond always looked half-dead. Like he hadn’t slept in years. The kind of guy who’d let someone cut in line at a grocery store and not even care.

Nothing like the killers she’d seen on TV. The ones who took people out without blinking.

“Are you scared?” Alfred turned to her, his gaze fixed on her face. He looked oddly gentle.

Maya reached out and pinched his cheek. “No. I told you, I don’t care!”

“Really?” Alfred blinked. “We thought you’d cry.”

“Why would I?”

“Because… a normal girl would be scared.”

But she wasn’t. She’d just accepted it. Sat there talking it through with them like it was nothing. “Guess I’m not that normal.” Maya leaned in, grinning. “Right now, I just think they’re kind of amazing.” Now that her suspicions were confirmed, she actually felt… lighter. Relieved.

Maya decided to be honest with them. She’d realized something. Her family didn’t really understand her.

“For me, it doesn’t matter what my family does. Even if they’re terrible people. As long as they’re my family, that’s enough.”

That night’s dramatic reveal didn’t change anything. If anything, it made things clearer.

After hearing her say that, Alfred finally understood how her brain worked.

Right and wrong didn’t matter. Good or bad didn’t matter. She wasn’t the kind of person who needed everything to be clean and pure.

If things went dark, she’d go with them.

It was… strange.

But then again, a kid who’d walk up to a stranger outside an orphanage and pick him as her father probably wasn’t normal to begin with.

Monday came, and with it, parent-teacher conference day.

Raymond stood there with freshly washed hair he hadn’t bothered to style, absently pushing his slightly wavy bangs aside, eyes unfocused.

“Do I have to go?”

He looked exhausted.

Wendy didn’t even look up as she sorted through outfits. “Yes. Any responsible parent shows up for this stuff.”

“Really?” Raymond dragged the word out. “When I was a kid, my parents never went. It was always the house staff.”

Wendy picked out a cream-colored outfit and flicked his bangs into place. “That’s because they were the weird ones. Parents are supposed to go. It shows you care.

“Come on. Stop stalling. We’re leaving soon.”

She took a step back and looked him over.

White T-shirt. Casual jacket. That pale, sleep-deprived face from too many late nights and no sunlight…

“Honey,” she said, a little concerned, “are you sure you don’t want to try a little harder? You already don’t stand out back home. At a private school, you’ll look even worse,”

“It’s fine,” Raymond said seriously. “A wife’s beauty is her husband’s pride. You being pretty is enough for both of us.”

Wendy touched her face, pleased. “Well, that’s true.”

She slipped on her heels and started toward the door.

“Maya, Alfred, I’m going to Toby’s conference first. Your dad will go to yours, okay?”

“Okay,” The two of them answered in sync.

Toby, who’d been glued to his game, finally looked up, confused. “Wait. Why am I involved?”

“I’m in middle school. I don’t need parents showing up for this.”

Wendy blinked, cheerful. “Because I just realized you’re not so little anymore. And I’ve never gone to one of your conference before. So this is me being fair, sweetheart.”

…Not so little anymore?

What kind of phrasing was that?

Toby slumped, too tired to argue.

Maya slumped right along with him.
