Chapter 83 Not Your Kid

“Yeah. What do you want? Old man, I don’t even know you.”

Her voice was soft and sweet, but the words coming out were anything but polite.

Thomas fell silent for two seconds. He had never met a child this blunt.

Funshed

It was obvious she was annoyed with him. Even though he desperately wanted to drag her off for a DNA test right then and there, it was their first meeting, and he didn’t want to scare her.

“I don’t mean any harm,” he said, slowing his tone. “It’s just… when I saw you, you reminded me of someone. I had a child who’s been missing for many, many years.

“You look a lot like my son,” Thomas spoke sincerely, crouching down so he was at eye level with her, his demeanor unusually gentle. “He has an older sister. They’re twins.

“And you really do look just like him.”

That was why he wanted to meet her.

Seeing the girl grow more guarded by the second, Thomas took out his phone and showed her a photo.

Maya stared at it for several long seconds.

Lawrence looked terrible.

She didn’t like thinking about the past, but the photo forced her to compare him to the boy in her memories.

The boy in the picture was painfully thin, his lips pale and pressed tight. His whole presence carried a kind of gloom and loneliness that didn’t match his age.

In her previous life, when she first returned home, her first impression of Lawrence had been that he was a proud little rich kid.

Back then, he still had a bit of baby fat, and his personality had been lively and cheerful.

Now, not only was there not a trace of softness left on his face, but he looked completely drained of life, his expression hollow.

He did not look okay.

Maya couldn’t help but look up at Thomas.

How exactly had he raised Lawrence into this state?

That question temporarily outweighed her disgust and wariness toward him. “Is this your son? He looks like he’s doing really badly.”

Thomas tightened his grip on the phone, his voice low. “I know…”

He had already taken Lawrence to countless therapists, but nothing worked. The boy was like a flower on

the verge of withering, and Thomas had no idea what else to do.

Maya felt irritated.

She really hated thinking about the past.

But in her memory, Lawrence had once been an innocent-almost foolish-child.

He liked being around Kaia, who kept him company, but he had also been close to Maya, his biological sister, always torn between the two.

What broke that fragile balance was the day he saw her being bullied at a party. He had completely fallen apart, trembling as he clung to her and cried for a long, long time.

And when he cried, Maya couldn’t stop herself from crying either.

The scene of the two of them crying together had looked utterly miserable.

“Maya…

“I didn’t know… I didn’t know they were bullying you,” he sobbed, barely able to catch his breath, hating his own age for the first time. “Just… just wait for me to grow up, okay?

“When I grow up, I’ll protect you.”

From that day on, he stopped talking to anyone else.

He followed Maya everywhere, step by step. In the vast Jackson household, the two children were like wounded animals huddling together for warmth.

Maya could feel his emotions collapsing because of what she went through-his pain growing deeper and deeper.

And gradually, the once cheerful boy became twisted and sharp-edged.

In this life, she had always believed that staying away from him was the best choice.

After all, Lawrence would be better off without her.

“Do you want to see him?” Thomas noticed how long she had been staring at the photo and immediately felt a flicker of hope.

He instinctively reached out, trying to take her hand, as if to lead her somewhere to talk.

Maya pulled away on reflex, her dazed expression snapping instantly into alertness. Her tone turned cold and firm.

“What does that have to do with you? I’m going back to class.”

Setting aside the fact that she hadn’t even decided whether she wanted to see Lawrence… Even if she did, there was no way she’d go anywhere with this piece of trash.

With that, she turned and walked straight back toward the classroom.

Thomas panicked and stepped forward, trying to follow her inside.

Maya reacted quickly. The moment she stepped through the doorway, she swung the heavy classroom door shut behind her.

“There’s a creep outside!” she shouted.

The class had been in session. At her words, all the students looked at each other, some even standing up to peek outside.

“What creep?” The homeroom teacher felt a cold sweat forming on her back. “Maya, that’s Mr. Jackson.”

Thomas was one of the richest men around, and his name carried weight. How could it possibly be associated with something like that?

“I don’t care, there’s a creep at school,” Maya insisted, her voice crisp and loud. “I’m telling my brother!”

Those four words landed like a spell with real power.
