Chapter 95 The Wrong Kind of Attention

Normally, Kaia would turn away the moment she saw Maya. But today, ever since Maya walked into the classroom, Kaia had been staring at her.

Maya didn’t pay much attention at first. Her mind was still on Lawrence.

She didn’t really want to approach Thomas.

That man only ever brought her bad memories and current trouble.

But Lawrence’s thin, gloomy face from the photo wouldn’t leave her head.

Based on memories from her past life, Maya believed Lawrence had gone to an elite private school. If she could figure out where, she might find a chance to get close to him.

Even just to confirm from a distance that he was doing okay.

The problem was that she didn’t know exactly which school Lawrence was in.

And asking Toby to investigate would be the fastest way.

But that meant she would have to explain why she suddenly cared about Lawrence.

With Toby’s annoying personality, he would definitely dig until he got every detail. Then, she would have to come up with another excuse on the spot.

Maya was already mentally planning lies.

All the way until class ended, she was still thinking about what excuse to use.

And during that entire time, Kaia kept looking back at her.

Not just looking, she even walked over and started circling Maya’s desk.

Maya finally looked up. “What exactly do you want?”

Thinking of her father’s serious instructions, Kaia took a deep breath and tried to sound natural. “I’m just looking. Can’t I? This classroom isn’t yours.”

She pretended to be calm and continued pacing around Maya’s seat.

To finish the task quickly, Kaia even thought that maybe she could pull a few strands of hair when Maya wasn’t paying attention.

But if she just grabbed it, Maya would definitely hit her.

She needed an ally.

“Jonathan,” Kaia slid over to Jonathan Filmore during break time, cupping her face and speaking in a soft, almost pleading voice. “Can you help me pull one strand of Maya’s hair?”

Jonathan paused mid-pen stroke.

He had already noticed Kaia acting strangely all day, circling Maya.

And he was thinking more carefully than she was.

“What are you trying to do, Kaia?” Jonathan asked, hesitating.

He really didn’t want to get involved with anything related to Maya again. Her brother was completely unreasonable, and the retaliation would come without logic.

He didn’t want to get dragged into trouble again.

“Ah, it’s not like that!” Kaia waved her hands quickly. “It’s a task my dad gave me!”

Jonathan frowned.

Something felt wrong. Very wrong.

“Kaia, your dad wants you to take her hair? Don’t you think that’s…”

Strange?

He felt like Maya looked familiar. Aside from her face vaguely resembling Kaia’s quiet, almost invisible younger brother, there was something else.

It was a strange sense of familiarity. It was as if he had known her for a long time.

However, that made no sense. He had never met her before.

So, where was that feeling coming from?

“I think it’s a little weird too,” Kaia admitted, “but it’s just a task. If I finish it, my dad said he’ll buy me a new amusement park!”

She genuinely didn’t care that much about Maya.

She had no friends, and at the parents’ meeting, her parents looked ordinary, even somewhat poor.

For a child raised in luxury like Kaia, even if something felt odd, she wouldn’t think too deeply about it.

Jonathan wisely chose not to continue. “I can’t help you with that,” he said. “Just wait. You’re in the same classroom, and there’ll be a chance eventually.”

He couldn’t bring himself to pull a girl’s hair.

Kaia immediately stomped her foot. “Fine! I’m not talking to you anymore!”

They parted on bad terms.

Alfred had recently become unusually favored by teachers at school.

It was because he had good grades, a smart mind, and good looks.

Even if he occasionally said something completely socially catastrophic, people still somehow forgave huny easily.

After the last class ended, he was called to the office to help organize some materials.

Waiting was long and boring.

“I’ll wait in the car, Alfred.” Maya leaned close to Alfred and whispered quickly before heading downstairs with Jenny.

Most of the time, Wendy was too busy to pick them up.

So, Toby had hired a dedicated driver.

She left the school gate later than others, and because of strict security, the area was already mostly empty.

“Bye, Jenny. See you tomorrow.” Maya waved to her friend, then scanned the surroundings for the driver.

When she finally spotted him, her eyes lit up.

She raised her hand, and the next second, someone grabbed her wrist.

Realizing something was wrong, Maya yanked hard backward, trying to break free.
