Mane
Chapter 6.
Corbin opened his eyes to find himself in a world of blinding white.
For a moment, he thought he was dead. Then, Sloane’s voice pulled him back to reality.
“Honey, you’re finally awake. You scared me to death.”
Sloane Sterling sat by the bed, her face tight with anxiety as she gripped his hand.
Corbin noticed the dark circles under her eyes and her messy hair. She actually looked worried.
Did Sloane actually care about him?
Brynn Sterling sat nearby, looking aggrieved. “It’s all my fault. If Dad hadn’t tried to protect me, he wouldn’t have…”
Sloane pulled both of them into a tight hug, her heart aching.
It was only then that Corbin realized his face was wrapped in gauze.
He reached up to touch it, but Sloane tried to stop him, her eyes filled with pain. She was too late.
Corbin remembered now. When he went off the cliff, his face must have hit the shattered glass.
So, he was disfigured?
Sloane’s eyes reddened. She squeezed his hand. “Husband, don’t worry. We’ll hire the best doctors. I won’t let it leave a scar, I promise. Just trust me.”
Corbin simply pulled his hand away, indifferent.
Disfigured or not, it didn’t matter.
What did a man who was about to become a pile of ashes care about his looks?
Over the next few days, Sloane stayed in the hospital room twenty-four hours a day.
She took care of him personally, cooking a wide variety of gourmet dishes, but Corbin couldn’t eat a thing.
He grew more haggard by the day, his body wasting away.
Sloane looked at him as if he were a piece of fine, fragile porcelain.
‘Husband, give me a smile, okay?”
Corbin’s lips slowly curled into a lifeless smile.
Seeing that smile felt like a knife twisting in Sloane’s heart.
She didn’t understand how things had ended up like this.
She had only wanted to punish him a little.
Perhaps the blow of being disfigured was just too much. She convinced herself he would recover with time.
When he was better, she would officially restore his status as the son-in-law of the Sterling family. She would let him return to his
old life. She would compensate him slowly. There was still a chance to fix everything.
Sloane comforted herself with these thoughts as she stepped out of the room.
That evening, the door opened. Corbin was staring blankly out the window.
Declan Thorne stood there, holding a medical report. He read each word slowly. “Terminal bone cancer. Incurable. No wonder you aren’t sad about your face. You’re a dead man.”
There was a smug note in Declan’s voice that he couldn’t hide.
