When he finally regained consciousness, he found himself tied up in an abandoned factory. Nearby, he heard the piercing cries of his daughter.
Dad… Dad, I’m scared!” Brynn was sobbing hysterically, her small face covered in tears as she looked to Corbin for help.
Suddenly, several large, burly men surrounded them, wielding baseball bats and tasers.
“Mr. Vance, don’t you think it’s time you paid back the money your family owes us?”
The men looked menacing. One pointed at Brynn. “If you don’t pay up, I’ll have to take your daughter as collateral. A kid this age isn’t worth much if we sell her, but if we cripple her and put her out on the streets to beg, we could make a decent profit.”
As he spoke, the leader raised his bat and swung it toward Brynn’s face.
The bat whistled past Brynn’s cheek, brushing past her cheek.
The men paused, seemingly surprised that Corbin hadn’t reacted.
Brynn began to scream and cry even louder. “Dad, save me! I’m so scared! Dad, save me!”
Corbin felt a cold chill settle in his chest.
He looked at the rope binding Brynn. It wasn’t even tight; it was just for show. He looked at the baseball bat that hadn’t even grazed her. In that moment, he understood everything.
This was all an act orchestrated by Brynn.
Every time the debt collectors had come in the past, Corbin had never hesitated to throw himself in front of Brynn. He didn’t care if he ended up with broken bones or spitting blood, as long as he could protect his daughter.
Now, he realized how incredibly stupid he had been. He was so blind he couldn’t even see through a performance.
Tears fell silently from his eyes. Corbin gave Brynn a long, hollow look and let out a tragic, mocking laugh. “What will it take to satisfy you?”
The men exchanged glances. One of them pulled a car key from his bag and tossed it in front of Corbin.
‘I heard that Mr. Vance used to be a racer. A ‘prodigy,’ they called you.”
‘I know you don’t have any money, so I won’t make it hard on you. Just get in that car and hit 200 km/h. Show us some of that legendary racing talent, and I’ll let your daughter go. What do you say?”
A battered, old car was parked at the entrance of the warehouse. In the distance, the road led straight toward a cliff.
Corbin looked at it and simply smiled a miserable smile. “Fine.”
He agreed so easily that the kidnappers were momentarily stunned.
Corbin broke free from his loose restraints, picked up the keys, and walked toward the car. “You want to see me drive? I’ll drive.”
The moment he sat in the driver’s seat, Corbin slammed his foot onto the gas.
The car roared to life and surged forward, picking up speed instantly. Faster and faster it went.
Soon, everything around him blurred into a roar of the engine and the whistling of the wind. The car felt as if it were being pulled forward by an invisible wire. The scenery outside became a distorted smear of colors as he raced toward the edge.
The kidnappers were starting to get scared. One of them turned to Brynn. “Miss Brynn, that’s enough, right? If he keeps going at this speed, the car and the man are both going to be toast.”
Brynn’s face was cold and filled with resentment. “That’s what he gets for hitting me!”
“I’m just giving him a little lesson!”
“He’s probably learned his lesson by now. Tell him to stop.”
