Chapter 627

Albert gave a helpless smile and started applying the ointment to Elnora with a cotton swab.

Elnora watched him the whole time, her expression calm and unchanging.

He made sure to avoid the broken skin as he applied the ointment.

Elnora had just taken a shower, and she was still damp and cool to the touch.

Once Albert finished applying the ointment, he gently pulled her pant leg back down.

Elnora quickly withdrew her leg.

Albert looked up at her, and Elnora looked down at him.

Their gazes locked, and Albert opened his mouth to speak. “Ms. Finley, maybe we could try being a couple…”

But before Albert could finish his sentence, Elnora’s phone rang.

She grabbed her phone, answered the call, and walked over to the window, obviously tuning out everything Albert had just said.

A flicker of helplessness flashed in Albert’s eyes. He put the cap back on the ointment, cleaned up quickly, and headed out.

After Elnora finished the call, she turned and cast a look at the bedroom door.

As Albert left, he casually closed the door for her.

Elnora stared at the tightly shut door for quite a while, dazed, before finally pulling her gaze away.

Early the next morning, when Elnora came downstairs, Albert was already up and waiting for her.

Since they were going to meet Albert’s teacher, Elnora went for a more understated look today. Her jet- black hair was left loose over her shoulders, making her seem more casual and less like the fierce businesswoman she usually was.

Albert glanced at her, his eyes flashing with a hint of emotion he tried to hide.

Together, they left Southview Residence and made their way to the outskirts of Harbor City, where Albert’s teacher lived.

Kailee had a country home that she built herself, nestled in the rural suburbs of Harbor City.

She was passionate about flowers, so the house was surrounded by all kinds of vibrant blooms.

At this time of year, the flowers were in full bloom, turning the whole place into a beautiful sight to behold.

After Albert parked the car, Elnora got out.

She stood by the car, waiting for Albert, admiring the thick clusters of flowers around the house.

Once the car was settled, Albert led Elnora inside.

Just as they got to the gate, a burst of cheerful laughter drifted out from inside.

Albert immediately looked at Elnora, worry flickering in his eyes.

Elnora didn’t even pause. She just kept walking right in.\

The moment they arrived, the laughter inside instantly died down.

Kailee followed everyone’s gaze to the door, and when she saw Albert and Elnora, she smiled warmly and walked over to greet them.

“Albert, you two made it,” Kailee said with a friendly grin.

Albert nodded and said, “Ms. Fuller, it’s been a while.”

Kailee walked over with a warm smile.

Elnora promptly handed her the elegant box Reese had prepared, taking the initiative to greet him.

“Happy birthday, Ms. Fuller!” Elnora said.

When she saw Elnora so confident and composed, Kailee’s smile grew even warmer.

“Albert, this must be your wife, Ms. Elnora Finley, right?” Kailee asked.

Albert nodded.

“Yes, Ms. Fuller,” Albert replied.

Kailee turned to Elnora with a warm, benevolent smile.

“Reese was right. She’s really elegant and dignified,” she said. “I’m truly sorry I couldn’t attend your wedding earlier. I wasn’t feeling well.”

Albert smiled and replied, “Ms. Fuller, your health is what matters most.”

Kailee gave a wry smile.

“Getting old means your body just doesn’t keep up like it used to,” she said. “Come on, let’s head inside and catch up.”

Albert replied with a quick “Sure,” then naturally wrapped his arm around Elnora’s waist, following Kailee inside with her close by his side.

The group that had been laughing and chatting with Kailee in the yard went dead silent as soon as Albert

and Elnora walked in.

Everyone’s gaze turned sympathetic, focusing on Stella.

Stella forced a bitter smile, her voice barely above a whisper as she faced her old classmates’ pitying looks.

Stella said quietly, “I’ll go help out in the kitchen.”

The others quickly echoed her, volunteering to help in the kitchen as well.

Everyone filed past Elnora and Albert.

Kailee could only smile wryly. “My kitchen’s pretty small. I’m afraid there’s not enough room for all of you.”

Someone chimed in casually, “Then let’s see if there’s anything else we can help out with.”

After that, everyone started gravitating toward Stella.

It was almost like they were picking sides, purposely leaving Elnora and Albert out.

Kailee was the only one who kept talking with Albert and Elnora.

When lunchtime came, everyone was bustling around, setting up for lunch.

Kailee called Albert and Elnora over.

The three of them headed over together.

Kailee was quickly ushered to the seat of honor by her old classmates.

Albert pulled out a chair for Elnora, holding it for her as she sat down.

Once everyone was settled, Kailee told everyone to dig in.

That was when Elnora realized there was no fork at her place.

Albert wiped his fork clean and handed it to Elnora.

Elnora reached out and took it.

Everyone fell silent, watching as Albert handed his fork to Elnora.

Stella’s face turned pale. She bit her lip, then offered her own fork for Albert to use.

“Here, use mine. I’ll grab another from the kitchen,” Stella said quietly.

Albert didn’t say anything. He simply stood up and walked toward the kitchen.

Stella’s hand paused awkwardly as she reached out to give Albert the fork.

With everyone staring at her, Stella’s eyes grew misty and a hint of embarrassment flickered in her gaze.

“Sorry, Ms. Finley, we honestly didn’t mean to leave you out,” someone said.

Elnora didn’t reply.

Harvey finally spoke up, unable to watch any longer. “Sorry, Ms. Finley.

“We usually just have the same few people here for Ms. Fuller’s birthday, but with someone new this year, things got a little mixed up.”

Elnora glanced up at him and replied in a steady, almost indifferent voice, “I get it.”

Her tone was so calm and neutral, there wasn’t a single thing anyone could criticize.

Harvey was pretty tight with Stella back in school, and he was about to say something else, but Kailee jumped in before he could.

“Alright, everyone, just sit down and eat. Albert’s already gone to grab a fork, so let’s not dwell on it. Ms. Finley isn’t even bothered. Do you really think she’s going to make a fuss like a kid?” Kailee said.

Harvey looked pretty awkward after Kailee called him out.

Kailee noticed how they’d deliberately left Elnora out.

Stella and Albert really did have a thing in the past.

But no one could ever predict how fate would play out.

Stella missed her chance, so she had no one to blame but herself.

The Campbell family was massive, and any woman marrying in had to be tough enough to handle anything that came her way.

Stella couldn’t even keep her own family in line, so it was no wonder Reese didn’t see her as good enough.

If someone else had gotten the kind of backing Albert gave Stella all those years, they would’ve already made a name for themselves.

Stella was a lost cause, and she even tried to drag the whole Taylor family along to mooch off Albert. Honestly, no one would put up with that.
