Chapter 8
On screen, Callum cranked the AC down to 64°F.
Tessa, freezing, tried turning it off.
He slapped her so hard she hit the ground:
“What are you doing? We’re making this right. Don’t screw it up!”
Tessa pointed at him, furious:
“YOU’RE the one who needs to make things right! Let me out! Don’t forget–I have proof of what you’ve done!”
Callum sneered. “You think you’d actually take me down with you? You stole a fortune. You go to jail, you’re never getting out.”
“You really wanna risk that?”
Tessa’s face twitched.
She wasn’t that stupid–she didn’t want to rot in prison.
She’d only taken the money because she had leverage.
But that didn’t mean she wasn’t terrified of jail.
Seeing her back down, Callum turned to the camera and dropped to his knees, face twisted with fake guilt.
“Maisie, I know you’re watching. I was wrong. Look! I’m paying for it now!”
“I know you still care. You’re just angry. Forgive me and I’ll kneel here forever.”
Before long he started shivering, curling up on the floor.
Tessa had started jogging to stay warm, but her lips were already turning blue.
I didn’t stick around. I went home..
By morning, they were still inside.
Both looked like hell–frozen, exhausted, trembling on the floor.
“Get them out. I rented the building to someone else. Client’s viewing today. Don’t want them in the way.”
Finally, the guards opened the door.
Callum and Tessa bolted out, soaking in the warmth like they’d come back from the dead.
“Maisie sent you, right? She forgives me. Where is she?”
The guard looked at him with disgust:
“Don’t flatter yourself. She just didn’t want you dying and tanking property value.”
“Client’s coming. You’re in the way.”
Callum’s eyes went wide:
“What are you talking about? This is MY company-”
The guard’s voice was ice:

Chapter 8
“Check the news. Your company’s bankrupt. Better figure out how you’re paying back what you owe.”
Callum’s hands shook as he pulled out his phone.
His scandals–exposed. Partners canceling.
Worse–his illegal deals had leaked.
He wasn’t just losing everything. He was going to prison.
Right then, sirens blared.
Callum tried to run but got slammed to the ground. Both were arrested.
At the station, they turned on each other, spilling every crime.
The whole time, Callum kept demanding to see me.
I went. One last time.
“Maisie, we’re married. You have to help me. If you don’t, I won’t sign the divorce. You’ll be humiliated with me!”
“Get me out. Give me five million bucks. Then we’ll talk divorce!”
So that’s why he wanted to see me.
Still only thinking about himself.
Under his gaze, I calmly pulled out a divorce certificate:
“Already got it. Don’t need your permission.”
All the fight drained out of him.
He looked at me, broken.
“Maisie, you-”
I stood and gave him one last look..
“Goodbye, leech.”
After that, we never saw each other again.
