Chapter 9

I picture Kane standing in his office, wondering if he’s cleaning the mess I’d made for him. However, I know he likely left his maids to do it. He’s probably off fucking Bianca again and licking her wounds.

Then again…I don’t feel any pain right now.

Leaving that thought alone, I sigh to myself as I think about just how unbothered Kane was by my threats. But I can’t let that deter me – I can’t let Kane get his way. He needs to know he’s not as untouchable as he thinks he is. Kane is not all-powerful.

Speaking of power…I pause a moment to once again reach out to my wolf. She doesn’t respond but this time that realization doesn’t worry me as much as it did before. Not after I heard and felt the way she hummed while she watched me burn Kane’s

papers.

Now that I’m not taking the medication my father gave me anymore, maybe I still have a chance. Despite Dr. Borsheim’s uncertainties, I can’t help but believe there is hope for my wolf, that she will still become the strong wolf she’s meant to be.

I’ve caught small glimpses of her power, but now it’s time to see what else she’s capable of.

I fall asleep smiling, planning ways to test my theory.

Kane’s POV

What a fucking mess.

I’ve managed to put out Evelyn’s little fire, glad to see that the smoke didn’t cause the pack house alarms to go off. Everything in the trash can is ruined – the files and priceless original books she burned. But like I told her – all those things mean little to me or can easily be replaced.

“I can’t believe you just let her get away with all of this!” Bianca fires out, gesturing to the ashes. “You handled that situation way too lightly! She should have been -”

“Enough,” I bite out, silencing her. Bianca’s eyes go wide before she sticks out her lower lip, trying to earn my sympathy by pouting, but I ignore her.

Instead, I sit down at my desk, looking at the pair of scissors Evelyn left behind. There are still treads stuck between the shears from when she’d destroyed my rug. My lip twitches as if daring to raise into a smile.

Truthfully, I’m surprised by the side of Evelyn I saw tonight. Between standing up to Bianca, challenging me, and easily ruining my things – she is nothing like what I’d expected.

Not that she has completely changed my opinion of her. She’s weak, her wolf practically nonexistent. Still, the behavior she displayed tonight was that of a Luna.

I abruptly shake my head, wanting to laugh as I dismiss the hint of admiration that attempted to fill my chest. It’s absurd to consider anything about Evelyn could meet the standard of a Luna. She’s just a sad excuse for a wolf – I shouldn’t care.

Still, as I sit here and smell the dissipating scent of her fire, I can’t help but grow curious about what Evelyn might do next. The possibility of her next move brings a strange tingle into my heart.

You need to stop pretending, my wolf’s voice fills my head. You’re not just interested in what she’ll do next. You’re clearly starting to be interested in Evelyn!

As my wolf’s words settle in, annoyance replaces the tingle in my chest. However, I don’t offer a reply or even a rebuttal.

I immediately shut him out.
