Chapter 7

Tessa was a player. After making things official with Caspian, she started hooking up with other guys.

Caspian fought with her over it multiple times. It even got back to his mother.

When I heard all this, I just smiled. I felt nothing.

During my time off, Grayson invited me to a newly opened restaurant downtown.

I hesitated at first but eventually agreed.

He was as excited as a kid, sending me a string of emojis: “No backing out!”

“If you back out, you’re a puppy!”

I couldn’t help but laugh helplessly.

The restaurant was beautifully decorated. Warm yellow lights bathed the table, making Grayson’s eyes look especially

bright.

He wore a black casual outfit today, his hair styled back to reveal his forehead. He looked sharper-more

striking-than usual.

“Lydia, you’ve gotta try this.” He cut a piece of his steak and placed it on my plate. “I heard it’s their signature dish.”

I was about to thank him when I caught sight of a familiar figure walking through the door.

Caspian.

I hadn’t seen him in months. He’d lost a lot of weight.

He saw me too. His gaze froze instantly.

The next second, he walked straight toward our table.

“Lydia.” His voice trembled. “I finally found you!”

Grayson looked at me, then at him, confused.

I set down my fork calmly. “Long time no see.”

Tears suddenly spilled down Caspian’s face.

“Can I talk to you alone? Just five minutes.”

Grayson tactfully stood up.

“You two talk. I’ll hit the restroom.”

Caspian sat in his seat, his fingers gripping a napkin tightly.

“Lydia, I was wrong… I was so wrong.” His tears dripped onto the table.

“Tessa… she never really cared about me.”

“She’s with someone else now. She even said I was too clingy…”

I watched him quietly, feeling absolutely nothing.

“So?”

“How is any of this my problem?”

“Can we start over?” He grabbed my hand, his fingers ice-cold. “I regret everything, Lydia.”

“These past few months, I’ve thought about you every single day…”

I gently pulled my hand back.

“Caspian, we’re over.”

“No!” He shook his head violently. “You still like me, don’t you? You’re just mad!”

“I’m not mad anymore.” I smiled. “I just don’t care anymore.”

His face went deathly pale.

Just then, Grayson returned, holding two cups of hot latte.

“For you.” He handed me one, then glanced at Caspian. “Want one?”

Caspian stared at him.

Suddenly, he stood up, his voice sharp, “Who are you?!”

Grayson blinked, then smiled. “I’m Lydia’s fiancé.”

“We’re getting married soon.”

I looked at him in surprise. He winked at me discreetly.

Caspian looked like he’d been struck by lightning. He stumbled back two steps.

“So… so you already…” His tears wouldn’t stop. “Lydia, you’re ruthless.”

With that, he turned and bolted out of the restaurant.

Grayson sat back down, smiling at me.

“Sorry, I took some liberties.”

I shook my head and couldn’t help but laugh.

“Either way, thank you.”

“No problem.” He rested his chin on his hand, his eyes sparkling. “If you’re willing, I’m ready to get married anytime.”

Outside the window, the sunset’s glow streamed in, falling across his profile.

I suddenly realized-his smile was warmer than anyone I’d ever known.

I thought Caspian would give up after that.

But the next day, he showed up at my office.

He stood at the entrance, pale as a ghost.

Dark circles hung under his eyes. His once-bright eyes were now dull and lifeless.

He clutched a thermos tightly in his hands.

When he saw me, he immediately forced a pleading smile.

“Lydia, I… I made your favorite chicken soup.”

His voice was hoarse, like he’d been crying for hours.

I frowned and didn’t reach for it.

“You don’t need to do this.” My tone was cold. “We’re over.”

His smile froze. His fingers trembled slightly.

But he stubbornly pushed the thermos forward. “I stayed up all night making it. Just try it, okay? You used to say…”

“Caspian.” I cut him off. “Stop bringing up the past.”

“We’re over.”

His eyes instantly turned red.

His lips quivered, like he wanted to say something, but he swallowed it back.

Finally, he lowered his head and whispered, “Okay… then, I’ll come back tomorrow.”

For the next two weeks, he came every single day.

Sometimes he brought food. Sometimes he just stood far away, watching me with eyes full of humility and desperation.

My coworkers started gossiping.

Some pitied him. Others mocked him for what he deserved.

Finally, one day, I couldn’t take it I stopped him

anymore

I stopped him on a tree-lined path near the office.

“What do you want?”

My tone was ice-cold.

He flinched but still mustered the courage to look up at me. “Lydia, I really know I was wrong… Can you, can you please give me one more chance?”

“Impossible.” My answer was firm.

His tears spilled over instantly.

His voice choked. “Then… then what do I have to do for you to forgive me? I can change. I can give up everything. I just

want to stay by your side…”

“Caspian.” I interrupted him. “Give up. We can never go back.”

His body swayed, like all the strength had been drained from him.

Finally, he slowly crouched down, hugged his knees, and sobbed silently.

I didn’t help him up. I just turned and walked away.
