“Based on what we can tell, Tracy was forced into a vehicle. They disabled the garage cameras beforehand, so we lost her position immediately. That’s why we’re calling for backup.”
Sean hung up, his face a mask of cold fury. He dialed another number, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low growl. “Find Yvonne. Get her, tie her up, and bring her to me. Now.”
Half an hour later, Sean stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office. He held a sharp dagger, the blade catching the moonlight with a jagged, silver glint.
His security team dragged Yvonne in and threw her onto the floor. She was bruised and disheveled from struggling, her breath hitching in terror.
She stared at his back, a sudden, primal fear clawing at her chest. She tried to force her voice to stay steady, though it shook with every word. “Who are you? What do you want with me?”
Sean turned around, his eyes as dark and hollow as the night outside. He stepped forward and pressed the tip of the blade under her chin.
The steel bit into her skin, drawing a thin line of red. “Tell me,” he said, his voice devoid of any warmth. “Where is Tracy?”
Yvonne flinched, the sharp sting of the blade making her heart hammer against her ribs. She tried to maintain her innocent act, meeting his terrifying gaze with a look of feigned confusion. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. Tracy left ages ago. Why are you asking me?”
In her head, she was already counting down the minutes. By now, Tracy should be dead. Once she was gone, Yvonne would be the only princess of the Xander family again, the brilliant PhD, the rising star of the industry.
Even if Sean suspected her, she’d already ditched the burner phone. There was no paper trail. As long as she didn’t talk, they had nothing. Even if they caught the kidnappers, they’d never recognize her; she’d used a voice modulator for every call. She had covered every track.
“You don’t know, huh?” A slow, predatory smile spread across Sean’s face. “Take her to the back room. I don’t care what it takes. Get the truth out of her.”
The color drained from Yvonne’s face as his massive guards stepped toward her. She scrambled backward, her voice rising to a frantic shriek. “You’re making a mistake! I didn’t do anything! You can’t do this to me! The Xanders won’t stand for it! Our project is about to launch!”
Sean made a sharp, impatient gesture. “She’s too loud. Get her out of my sight.”
Just then, Chris called out from across the room. “The footage is back. Come look.”

Sean strode over. On the restored screen, Tracy was being dragged into a battered van by two men. He hit the pause button the second the license plate came into view, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. “Run the plates. Find the owner.”
When Tracy finally opened her eyes, everything was a blinding, clinical white. The sharp, bitter scent of disinfectant filled her lungs, and she realized she was in a hospital bed.
Sean was by the window on his phone, his voice low and laced with disappointment. “You’re telling me she jumped? From the third floor?”
The guards on the other end were stumbling over their apologies. They’d been watching the door like hawks, but Yvonne had been desperate enough to go out the window while they were waiting to bring her food. She was gone.
“She won’t get far,” Sean said coldly.
Yvonne was sloppy. She thought she was a mastermind, but she’d left a trail of breadcrumbs a mile long. He already had the evidence he needed, but he wanted Tracy to be the one to decide her fate. Tracy was the victim; she deserved to be the one to pull the trigger on Yvonne’s career.
He hung up when he noticed Tracy was awake and quickly crossed the room to her side.
He took her hand, his eyes softened by a deep, visible worry. “You’re awake. How do you feel? Are you in pain?”
Tracy shook her head weakly. “Water. Please.”
He poured her a glass and helped her drink. Once the fog in her head began to clear, she checked the time on her phone. It was eleven in the morning.
The realization hit her like a physical blow. Morgan was supposed to be in surgery. She threw back the covers and tried to swing her legs out of bed. “Which OR is my uncle in? I need to go.”
Sean’s hand was firm but gentle as he pressed her back into the pillows. “You’re still the patient here, Tracy. Look at you, you’re exhausted. If you walk in there like this, you’re just going to give them something else to worry about. Stay put. You can’t see him while he’s under anyway. Wait until he’s out, then I’ll take you.”
