Chapter 157 Cornered at SchoolÂ
Maya looked up and saw a second man rush into the room.Â
“Seriously? You’re that useless?” the man snapped, staring at his partner on the floor, clearly shocked. “You got taken down by a kid?”Â
The man on the ground was in too much pain to answer. He could only groan.Â
Phoebe curled up under the teacher’s desk. Her whole body shook. She covered her mouth tight, too scared to make a sound.Â
Maya moved fast. She climbed onto a desk in one smooth motion. When the second man lunged at her, she reacted right away. She stepped across several desks in a row, quick and careful, dodging his reach.Â
The adult and the kid struggled back and forth for a while.Â
At last, the man grabbed a chair nearby and swung it straight at her head.Â

Maya didn’t have time to dodge. She caught the chair midair with one hand. At the same time, he reached for her leg. Using the height from the desk, she lifted her leg and struck fast-a sharp sidekick that hit his neck hard.Â
Crack!Â
A clear, sharp sound-like a bone slipping out of place.Â
“Ahh!”Â
Pain shot through his neck. His body went weak. He clutched his throat and dropped to the floor, screaming.Â
Maya jumped down at once.Â
“Run, Phoebe!” she shouted toward the front of the room. “Don’t stay there! It’s not safe!”Â
She didn’t wait for a reply. She had already dashed out of the classroom.Â
The man whose neck was twisted to the side forced himself to hold back his cries. He grabbed his walkie-talkie and shouted, “I saw that girl! She’s on the third floor! Everyone get up here and block her!”Â
Maya ran into the hallway. She looked left, then right. There were people moving at both ends.Â

What the heck? Why are they everywhere?Â
She had no idea Kaia had already given her away. She didn’t know she had become their main target.Â
All she could think about was how to escape.Â
At least five people were coming after her.Â
She scanned around and spotted the railing along the hallway.Â
Third floor. Below it was a lower platform.Â
In her head, she screamed frantically.Â
“Are you there? System?”Â
Silence.Â
“System! System!” she kept shouting as she ran toward the railing. “If I jump, will I die?”Â
Still no answer.Â
“System, will I die?!”Â
She had climbed onto the railing.Â
“System!!!”Â
At last, the system gave in.Â
“No.” A flat mechanical voice sounded in her head. “You’ll be fine. Just jump. This height is nothing for you now.”Â
After all, this experience measured Maya’s strength against Wendy’s.Â
Maya would become a woman as strong as Wendy one day.Â
“Thank you. You’re so nice.”Â
Once she knew it was safe, she grabbed the cold edge of the railing with both hands, swung herself up, and let her body hang in the air.Â
The wind rushed past her ears.Â
She clenched her teeth and let go.Â

When she hit the ground, she stumbled a couple of steps. Her knees bent slightly, but she managed to steady herself.Â
Maya looked up at the height of the third floor.Â
Then she looked down at her slightly shaky legs.Â
She muttered under her breath, “That was kind of thrilling.”Â
The system commented, “You’re too timid. Even if you jumped from the fifth floor, you’d be fine.”Â
Maya rebuked, “But no normal person goes around jumping off buildings for fun.”Â
In normal situations, a fall like that would definitely kill someone.Â
Maya didn’t have time to think. The moment she landed, she turned to run and she ran into a familiar classmate.Â
The boy stared at her stupidly, his face frozen in shock.Â
“Holy shit!” Vincent blurted out, unable to hold it in. “Did you just jump down from up there?!”Â
Before Maya could answer, his expression turned even more dazed. He muttered to himself, “No way… no way… have you been hiding your identity the whole time? Are you some kind of superhero?”Â
Maya was stunned.Â
Too stunned, Maya couldn’t help but glance at him again.Â
Was this kid still stuck in his fantasy phase?Â
Well, he was only six or seven. It’s normal at that age.Â
Maya didn’t have time for this. Right now, everyone made her uneasy. She stayed on guard. “Stay away from me. Don’t follow me!”Â
“What? Why?” he asked, sounding hurt. “Aren’t we classmates?”Â
It’s not like he was a bad guy.Â
“Hey, Maya, how did you jump from that high up and not get hurt? Our school building is really tall.”Â
He kept talking nonstop, like he couldn’t help himself. Then he tried to flatter her. “Are you oneÂ

of those girls who go to school by day but secretly save the world at night? You have magic? A goddess of some sort?”Â
This guy talks way too much. So annoying.Â
Maya ignored him and started scanning the area. For now, she didn’t see anyone around.Â
“Do you know where the equipment room is?”Â
“Yeah,” he said. “Why?”Â
Maya answered this time, almost kindly, “I need to find a useful tool.”Â
