Chapter 158 No Assembly TodayÂ

A stun baton was only good for catching someone off guard and knocking them out. Its power wasn’t that strong.Â
Vincent didn’t fully understand the situation, but since Maya had been bold enough to jump off a building earlier, he decided not to argue. “I know where it is. Come with me.”Â
They moved through the hallway one after the other, keeping low and staying quiet, until they reached the equipment room.Â
It was well stocked. No guns, of course-but there were barbells, dumbbells, baseball bats, and all kinds of gear.Â
Maya glanced over everything.Â
Then her eyes stopped on a toolbox in the corner.Â
She walked over and opened it.Â
Inside lay a hammer.Â
Not a small one. The hammerhead was about the size of a fist, with a wooden handle. It felt solid and heavy in her hand.Â
Maya picked it up and tested the weight.Â
Perfect.Â
She had found a tool she liked; she finally started paying attention to her classmate.Â
“You didn’t go to the assembly?”Â
Vincent pursed his lip.Â
“What assembly?” he said with a scoff. “I’m not going. Why waste time on that when I could be having fun? Who wants to go up to the rooftop anyway?”Â
Just thinking about it felt ridiculous.Â
“And what’s the point of gathering that early? A bunch of students lining up on the roof? What, are they all going to jump or something?”Â
Their school rooftop was huge. If everyone really gathered there, the scene would be wild.Â
Vincent was a rich kid who never followed rules. Lazy, careless, always doing his own thing.Â

He hadn’t paid any attention to whatever the teacher said over the announcements.Â
The two of them walked out, one after the other. Maya didn’t head deeper into the school. Instead, she went outside, where it was more open.Â
It was easier to run without bumping into people, but it was too open-easy to get spotted andÂ
chased.Â
“Maya, don’t you think it’s super quiet today?” Vincent looked around. “Maybe everyone’s already in class? I didn’t see anyone in the hallway.”Â
Maya glanced at him, amazed at how clueless he was. “Didn’t you see anyone grabbing students on your way here?”Â
“I saw a couple,” he said, still grinning. “But that’s normal, right? If students skip class, teachers grab them and drag them off for a lecture.” He even looked a little proud. “Good thing I ran fast. They didn’t catch me.”Â
Maya had no words.Â
Sometimes, dumb luck really worked in the fool’s favor.Â
The moment they stepped out of the equipment room, they ran into two girls rushing toward them.Â
“What a coincidence, Annie.” Maya tilted her head, a little surprised. “You didn’t get caught either?”Â
She didn’t know many people at this school, but she had a good memory. While running around earlier, she had spotted a few familiar faces.Â
Too bad she still hadn’t found her brother.Â
Where had those two gone?Â
Annie looked up and saw a familiar face. She let out a small sigh of relief.Â
“I’m not stupid,” she said, a hint of pride in her voice.Â
She was good at reading situations. When things felt off, there was no way she’d blindly follow the announcements. The moment she saw a bunch of unfamiliar faces around, she grabbed her friends and hid in the lounge.Â
“Maya, did you just fight those kidnappers?” she asked, glancing at Maya’s hair.Â
Maya’s hair was chestnut brown under the sunlight, with soft curls at the ends. Right now, it wasÂ

a complete mess.Â
“Kidnappers?” Vincent blinked, still completely lost.Â
He stared at them, confused.Â
One of the girls, named Sophia Wilkinson, stared in shock when she heard that.Â

“There are kidnappers in the school,” she said. “Everyone knows it. You’re the only one who doesn’t?”Â
Vincent froze. “Huh?”Â
His mouth hung open. His brain seemed to stall for a second.Â
Then it finally clicked.Â
“So when you jumped off that floor just now, you were running from them?”Â
“Jumped?” Annie’s voice shot up. “What are you even talking about? There’s no way a kid like Maya would-”Â
They kept talking, but Maya didn’t join in.Â
Her eyes stayed fixed on the corner ahead.Â
A shadow was creeping closer.Â
The man hadn’t expected to run into a small group of students.Â
He picked up his pace and walked toward them.Â
“Hey, kids,” he said with a fake smile, trying not to alarm them. “What are you doing here? Didn’t the announcement ask all of you to head to the rooftop?”Â
He didn’t finish.Â
The moment he rushed forward, Maya lifted the hammer she’d been hiding behind her back and swung it at him.Â
Thud!Â
The man dropped to the ground.Â
Everything went quiet.Â
Annie just stood there, staring.Â

She was stunned by how fast Maya moved.Â
From the moment that man showed up to when he got close, he’d barely said two sentences. Now, he was flat on the floor.Â
Annie opened her mouth, struggling to find words.Â
“Oh, Maya.” Annie couldn’t help and praised, “You’re like a soft little… sledgehammer.”Â
When she first realized something was wrong at school, she tried asking a few students who brought guns with them for help, hoping to escape with them.Â
