Chapter 181 We’re Moving Tonight

If Alfred had explained things a little more clearly, Maya would’ve figured it out fast and run for it already.

Alfred was being held so tightly he couldn’t move. He complained a beat later, “Maya, that kind of hurts.”

“Suck it up.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Then shut up.”

He chose survival. “Okay.”

Maya narrowed her eyes. “You said George works as a cop, but what you really meant is he beats cops up, right?”

“Yeah.”

“And Edric?” she asked, watching him carefully. “You said he’s a doctor. What does he actually do?”

Alfred fell silent. In the end, he said, “I didn’t lie about that. He really does have a medical license.”

Maya blinked and waited. Nothing.

“And?” she pressed.

“Whether he can actually fix people is another story.”

Maya’s eyes went wide in horror. “Wait, does he kill people when he is trying to fix them?”

“I can’t really say,” Alfred muttered. “Don’t focus too much on his job.

“That’s just how he gets things done faster,” Alfred said. “If he needs something, he’ll just go get certified for it. Law license, medical license-whatever. If it’s useful, he can get it.”

Maya went quiet, thinking.

So Edric was one of those all-around overachievers.

“Then why didn’t your family make him the heir?” she asked. “From what you all said, he sounds like the best choice. Smart, capable, and good at everything.”

Alfred thought for a moment. “He was kind of sensitive as a kid. After a kidnapping, something changed. He got really quiet. Slow to react. He shut down a little. Maybe have some mental issues.

“Grandpa was worried he might lose it, so he stopped pushing him. He picked Toby who grew up with him.”

And it turned out, Toby handled pressure way better than Edric.

“Once we turned eight, we were sent to an island with a bunch of kids our age,” Alfred added. “It was a survival game.”

Maya froze. In her past life, the people she knew were just rich kids. Nice cars, easy lives. Nothing like this.

“Wait, seriously?” she said, stunned. “That sounds like something out of a TV show. Like villains dumping people on a remote island and making them fight to survive.”

And this family actually did that to their kids?

Then again, this world was a comic.

As crazy as it sounded, it somehow made sense.

Maya tilted her head, curious. “So after you turn eight, you’ll go too?”

“I will.” Alfred didn’t hesitate. He even sounded a little eager.

He didn’t want to stay with his parents forever.

After watching his older brothers leave one by one, he had started to look out at the world too.

Everyone in his family was like that.

Deep down, they were drawn to danger. They would never be happy staying in one place.

Maya was different. To her, nothing was better than home. She loved being there.

But people made their own choices.

She liked Alfred. She wanted him to be happy.

So her voice softened a little. “Then, when you leave, if you have time, come home and visit, okay? I’ll wait for you at home.”

Alfred looked up.

Her eyes were gentle. Her voice was light, almost like it carried no weight. She didn’t try to stop him. She only asked him to remember to come home.

His favorite little sister just stood there, quietly looking at him.

Something in Alfred’s chest cracked, soft and sudden.

He pressed his lips together, then promised seriously, “Okay.”

At the other end of the living room, Raymond stepped in before a full fight could break out.

“Hold on. Don’t hit him yet.”

He grabbed George by the back of his collar and tossed him aside.

Then he reached out and pulled Wendy into his arms. Resting his chin on her shoulder, he said in a low voice, “We need to move tonight. If we stay, the police and some investigators will be here tomorrow. You hate dealing with them, don’t you?”

“Tonight?” Wendy forced down her anger. She turned and hooked her arms around his neck, staring at him. “What did you do? Kill someone at school?”

Otherwise, there was no way they’d have to move overnight.

Raymond didn’t deny it.

“They kidnapped Maya. I got a little mad. And I lost control, just a tiny bit.”

As he spoke, he pinched his fingers together, showing how “small” it was, and repeated, “Just a little.”

Wendy didn’t scold him. Instead, she raised a brow, looking almost pleased. “I told you before. Useless coworkers should’ve been dealt with a long time ago.”

She let him go, crouched down and pulled the two youngest kids into her arms.

She gently squeezed their arms and legs, checking them over. After making sure they looked fine, she finally relaxed.

“You two okay? Not too scared, right, sweethearts?”

Maya shook her head.

“Nope. I’m not scared.”
