Chapter 186 Taken in the Dark

“If I get some free time, and work isn’t too busy, I’ll come home and explain everything to you.

I promise,” Raymond said it smoothly, like he’d said it a hundred times before.

As for when he’d be free? Probably never.

He had no intention of going back.

But strangely, this time, Ned wasn’t angry. There was even a faint smile in his voice. That alone made Raymond feel uneasy.

“Don’t bother coming home. Dad already went to see you. Actually, he’s planning to take the girl.”

Raymond’s heart dropped for a second. He tossed the phone aside and looked out the window. Sure enough, the kids who had been playing outside in the yard were gone.

“I told you before,” the voice on the phone turned cold. “You should think about the consequences before you do anything, Raymond.”

“What are you planning to do?” Raymond closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them again, they were calm. “You’re not monsters, right? She has no value to you. It’s a waste of time.”

Ned laughed.

“No value? I don’t think so. We can’t deal with your crazy wife, sure. And your sons are family; we’re not planning to touch them. But…”

He shifted in his chair, leaning back, his tone lazy. “Your daughter? She’s not blood-related. You can’t protect her every second of every day. You know that. If I want to hurt her, no one can protect her. If you care about her so much, maybe don’t make it so obvious.”

The chair creaked softly as he rocked back and forth.

“I’d love to see your face right now. Honestly, we weren’t planning to do anything, but you made it clear you care.”

“Who said I care?” Raymond replied calmly.

He wasn’t panicking.

He had expected something like this would happen.

Raymond just kept putting off going home because he hated the idea. He didn’t expect his old man to act this fast and take Maya away.

“You don’t care?” Ned paused, then laughed again. “You probably care too much.”

Ned doesn’t bother to argue.

“Oh, and don’t be so hostile toward me,” he added. “Yeah, I caused trouble before. But not this time. This came straight from Dad. Instead of arguing with me, you’d better hope that old man doesn’t do anything to her.”

The call ended.

For Maya, the kidnapping happened in a flash.

They were clearly professionals. The attack came from behind. She didn’t even get a chance to make a sound before they shoved her into a car.

A blindfold went over her eyes. Something stuffed into her mouth. Within seconds, her mind started to go fuzzy.

The last thing she noticed was the dull thud of the car door closing. After that, nothing.

She didn’t know how long it had been.

She didn’t know where they had taken her.

She woke up a few times during the ride, the car bumping along. Then she blacked out again.

When she woke up for real, her feet were finally on the ground.

Someone dragged her out of the car. The moment her shoes touched the floor, she finally got a grip of reality.

They led her forward.

The whole time, she stayed quiet. No shouting. No struggle.

That made the woman beside her glance over a couple of times.

What a strange kid.

Not even scared.

When the blindfold was finally removed, Maya blinked fast, trying to adjust to the light.

Then she realized she was standing in the entrance hall of a mansion. From outside, it looked

like a small palace.

🙂

Maya felt out of place. She lowered her head and stared at the black-and-white tiled floor. Then she looked up, confused, taking in her surroundings.

She looked completely lost.

Where did they bring me?

Just as she was about to sneak a better look around, her eyes caught someone sitting on a single armchair.

He looked to be in his early 50s. Brown hair, with a few strands of gray at the temples. It didn’t make him look old, just more mature and serious.

His features were sharp. Deep-set eyes. High brow bone. Straight nose. His lips curved slightly downward when at rest, giving him a strict, hard-to-approach look.

This man looked like a school principal.

Maya stared at him, still confused.

He looked rich. Filthy rich.

So why would someone like him kidnap her?

She must have looked a little slow, standing there like that.

The man let out a soft sigh. Then he spoke. “You’re Maya, right?”

Maya was puzzled.

He knows me?

Sensing her confusion, the system-which had been quiet for a long time-suddenly popped

For once, it was being helpful.

It even gave her a few options.

“Option A. Old geezer, are you blind? I’m your granddaughter!”

“Option B. Wow, you’re still alive?”

“Option C. Hi, I’m your grandmother.”
