Chapter 42

Evelyn’s POV

My stepmother and stepsiblings are red in the face at the Alpha King’s declaration. Arguments are clearly on the tips of their tongues. However, my father jumps in before they can say anything they may regret.

“Alright! Alright,” my father declares with an annoyed sigh. His face is red with embarrassment. Everything will be returned to Evelyn.”

This declaration seems physically painful for him as he cringes, looking to my stepmother and giving a nod as if to encourage her.

Anger is clear in her eyes and yet she tries to suppress it as signals my stepsiblings forward.

Katya comes first, taking off a silver bracelet and pressing it firmly into my hand. She says nothing, her features hard as she walks away.

Flynn comes next, pulling a ring from his thumb that he also places in my hand.

“There are books in my room,” he says begrudgingly. “They’ll be moved into yours.”

He then storms away, leaving my stepmother to be the last expected to step forward. She makes sure to leave a good distance between us as she speaks tightly.

“The furniture and quilts we have will also be moved into your room,” she gives a clipped nod, beginning to turn away as if too dignified for me.

“I would prefer if they were moved to Kane’s estate,” I tell her, causing her to swiftly turn back to me.

“What?” she asks in shock, nostrils flaring.

“I’d like them transferred to my husband’s home,” I repeat. “Seeing as I’ll be returning there this evening.

I’d like them with me.”

My family is stunned by this news as they so deeply believed that Kane had kicked me out. It’s so pleasing to prove them wrong. The Alpha King even seems pleased as he stands off to my side.

“Fine,” my stepmother presses, attempting to turn away from me again.

“Oh, and I think you’re forgetting something,” I state, causing her to turn back. “The necklace.”

Her hand goes to the center of her chest, just below her collarbones. She strokes the amulet there, her hands slow as they take off the necklace. She then slaps it into my open palm before she also storms

away.

The necklace is warm in my palm as I stare down at it, a warmth filling my chest. I can’t believe that I have my mother’s belongings back – I am grateful that the Alpha King’s presence has such a powerful effect on my family.

“Now that that’s settled,” the King speaks up. “Perhaps a tour of the property? I’d like to see how you’re running things.”

“Of course,” my stepmother says, trying to recover though her shoulders are still ridged. “I’d be happy to show you around.”

The Alpha King is pleased enough, giving a nod as he and his entourage follow her lead. My stepsiblings take up the rear of the group, making sure to shoot me daggers before they exit the room.

“I hope you’re happy,” my father hisses at me once we’re alone. “Was it really worth causing a scene over a bunch of junk?”

“If it was such junk then why didn’t you just give it to me in the first place?” I fire back. “These things were my mother’s. They’re rightfully mine.”

My father scoffs. “You’re just like your mother – you don’t care about anyone but yourself.”

My brows pull together, a fire burning in my stomach as my father speaks badly of my mother.

“Why do you always speak so poorly of her? Or why are you so quick to betray her like this? Giving her things away and not willing to honor her,” I throw out. “I thought you loved her.”

Again, my father makes a disapproving sound – snorting at me.

“Love,” he says the word with disgust. “I did love your mother, but that was before she treated me like I

was beneath her.”

I shake my head. “What do you mean?”

“The truth is that the entire time your mother and I were together, I had never been treated with respect. Your mother never allowed me to take part in anything important within our pack. I was always just cast

aside.”

I soak in my father’s words, sorting through them one by one. I’ve spent enough years with him to know that he tends to bend the truth, especially when he’s experiencing a level of resentment. He certainly sounded as though he loathed my mother now.
