Chapter 43
“How can I love a woman who didn’t even love me?” he tosses out. “The person your mother loved has
never been me.”
What is he implying? That my mother only loved herself? Or that I was the only person she loved?
I may be able to assume the last question is true considering how he hates me, but I can’t help but feel his words go deeper than that.
“Your mother had her secrets and she was always keen on keeping them locked far away from me,” he continues to rant. “Especially when it comes to her secret will. She made sure I had no part in that.”
My eyes widen, realizing my father didn’t intend for this last information to slip. However, he’d been too
far into his rant.
“What do you mean? She has a secret will somewhere?” I ask. “Are you keeping it hidden on purpose?”
“Are you stupid?” my father snaps at me. “I don’t know what the will entails nor do I know where it is. She made sure of that.”
My heart races, attempting to take in each new discovery my father has thrown at my feet. It clears he’s still in a fit of annoyance, fuming over this will that my mother clearly hid far away from him. But why would she do that?
Likely because it’s not meant for him. He may know of its existence, but likely she hid it away so he wouldn’t find it. Maybe because it was meant for someone else.
Someone like…me.
The beat of my heart pounds even harder now as I consider the possibility. Meanwhile, my father seems to compose himself as he takes a breath and smoothes out his jacket. Watching him try to piece himself back together, I promise myself that I will do whatever it takes to find my mother’s secret will.
Especially so my father never gets the chance to put his hands on it.
A door opens off to our side and the Alpha King returns with his entourage and my step family. He walks quickly, stopping once he reaches my father and I.
“I’ve seen enough,” he states officially. “I think it’s time we take our leave. Evelyn?”
I blink at him and so does the rest of my family as the Alpha King gestures me along. It’s not lost on me that he’s being cryptic, purposely not telling my family what he made of his visit. I can’t help but be pleased over the fact that they’ll be left in the dark.
“Make sure Evelyn’s rightful inheritances are delivered to Kane’s pack house within the week,” the Alpha King reminds my stepmother. We are then exiting my father’s home and the Alpha King invites me to ride
in his car.
I’m thankful that he is being so gracious. I would hate to ride home alone and have to fester over

everything that happened today.
As we begin our drive, I stare out the window for a moment, hoping that my mother’s belongings safely make it to Kane’s. I wouldn’t be surprised if my family decided to sabotage anything beforehand.
“That was quite the…experience,” the Alpha King states, clearly referring to my family’s behavior.
I nod. “That’s pretty normal around there,” I state, but then clamp my mouth shut. For some reason, I don’t want to give too much away.
The corner of the Alpha King’s lips twitch upward as he stares at me, as his eyes briefly glance down to my mother’s necklace now secured around my neck.
“You must be pleased,” he says, his eyes coming back up. “That you have a wonderful husband to return to, and that you don’t have to stay at your father’s side.”
Slowly, I give him another nod. “Yes…I am.”
And I suppose that’s partly true. I’m glad to have an excuse to leave my father, but I don’t know that I’m grateful to return to Kane’s brooding side.
Instead…I don’t really feel like I belong anywhere.
