Chapter 44

Evelyn’s POV

The driver drops me off back at the pack house as the Alpha King tells me he has other business to attend to elsewhere. As I make way inside, I begin to head toward my room, but my steps slow as I hear voices coming from one of the pack’s meeting rooms.

I wonder if Kane is in there, which causes my feet to move before I can even think to stop them. I want to tell him about my mother’s things arriving in the next few days, hoping that if he knows then it will help make sure that everything is actually delivered.

As I reach the door, I almost think to knock or cautiously let myself in, but as I mentally remind myself of my role as Luna, I’m confident as I press the door open.

Kane is not in the room. Instead, what I find is a group of ten other pack members gathered and all of their attention directed at none other than Bianca. It appears that she’s leading a meeting of some kind.

“Oh, sorry. I thought -” I begin but soon fall silent as I notice a folder laid across the table. Bianca holds the documents pulled from the file, but on the folder itself is one name written clear as day.

Mine.

I raise a brow, lifting my gaze to meet Bianca.

“What’s going on here?” I ask, no longer feeling apologetic.

Bianca’s eyes narrow on me. “That’s none of your business,” she answers coldly, snatching the file from the table. “We’re having a private meeting. As a Beta, I am expected to handle business while Kane is out. It’s my job.”

Her words are true – that is what is expected of her. However, there’s one tiny problem.

“I think it is my business, considering my name is written across the folder you’re clutching,” I state.

“And you think that automatically means it belongs to you?” Bianca mocks. “How childish of you – thinking that something is yours just because it has your name on it.”

Goddess, this woman is such a headache.

“Says the woman who thinks it’s okay to take things that don’t belong to her,” I reply. “Does Kane know that you have this file? Or should I call him to ask?”

Proving that I’m not messing around, I pull out my phone, ready to call Kane. And I will if she pushes me to that point. Because I’m tired of these silly little games from Bianca.

However, it doesn’t seem as though I need to jump to those measures. Instead, Bianca regards me coldly as she places the folder on the table and then harshly slides it in my direction.

“If it’ll make you shut up then just take it,” she bites out.

Before the folder can slide off the table, I pick it up and open it up to see what is inside. Immediately, I

raise a brow.

This was meant for me. There’s a note inside stating that I have been assigned my first official duty as Kane’s Luna. I am expected to plan and host an upcoming farewell dinner for the Alpha King’s departure.

I’m not sure how or where Bianca discovered the file, but it’s clear that she took it upon herself to interfere and try to take over the task.

“You thought you could just steal this?” I ask, glancing up at her. “Kane assigned it to me as his Luna.”

“Oh, please,” Bianca starts. “We both know that you can’t handle this. You’ll only mess it up. Kane needs someone experienced to handle this type of job – not trash!”

My jaw tightens. “I am Luna of this pack, whether you like it or not. And as Luna, this is my duty.”

I wave the file at her and I can see Bianca wrinkle her nose at me in annoyance. Her mouth opens, likely to hurl other insults at me, but someone else is speaking up instead.

“This meeting was meant to be hosted by Luna?” one of the other pack members asks.

“You never told us that,” someone else speaks up.

“We should have been told in advance that this was meant to be a Luna led meeting,” a woman declares.

“That’s the way of the pack.”

“Plus, if Kane finds out -,” the first man tries, but Bianca cuts him off.

“Enough,” she states, fuming as she senses the lack of support from those around her. Yet, she tries to keep herself together as she regards me.

“Fine,” she throws out. “If it really means that much to you then go ahead and plan the party. But don’t expect any of my help.”

I want to laugh at that, but I keep my head high, letting her know just how much her words don’t affect

“That won’t be a problem,” I state. “I don’t want your help.”

“Oh, but none of my entourage will be helping you either,” Bianca continues, lacing her words with bitter sweetness. “Or the pack for that matter. I’ll make sure of it. After all, you may be Luna but none of us want you here.”

Yeah, she and everyone else has made that abundantly clear.

“You’ll be all on your own for this one,” Bianca states, signaling everyone else in the room to get up and start filing out. “Good luck with that.”

She follows along with them, but doesn’t miss her chance to stop at my side and hiss the word “trash”

under her breath.

Finally, I am left in the room alone, staring at the file in my hands and the empty seats around me. Just likely Bianca said, I am left to do this all on my own.

However, I am not afraid. I don’t need the help of Bianca or any of her minion bullies.

I can figure this out on my own.
