Chapter 283 A Public Reckoning
Regardless of why she was there, Yvonne felt that Tracy showing up was nothing short of self-humiliation.
She tugged on Jared’s sleeve and whispered, “What is Tracy doing here on such an important day? Don’t tell me they just crashed the event to try and steal our thunder. This whole thing is being live-streamed; they’re going to look so desperate and embarrassed.”
Yvonne wasn’t going to let Tracy take even a sliver of her spotlight. She might have lost that idiot Chase’s protection, but at least Jared and Trevor still believed in her. As long as the two men with real power in the family stayed on her side, she could secure her shares in Xander Corp without a hitch.
Jared glanced at her, his voice flat. “That’s their business. If they want to embarrass themselves, let them. What does it have to do with you?”
He knew exactly what she was trying to do. She was stirring the pot and trying to use him as a weapon. He had been blind before and made plenty of mistakes, but his head was clear now. Once today was over, Yvonne and her mother would have zero leverage left. Today was the day he planned to send them straight to hell.
Ever since he’d seen Yvonne’s true colors, he had been running a private investigation. He now held enough evidence to ensure they rotted behind bars for a very long time.
Yvonne paled. Jared wasn’t taking the bait. She wondered what was going on? Had he noticed something? But she quickly dismissed the thought; he had just kicked his own brother out last night. If he really knew the truth, there was no way he would have done that. She was just overthinking it.
She grabbed Jared’s arm, acting the part of the concerned sister. “I’m just worried, that’s all. She shouldn’t be here. You don’t think she’s so jealous of us winning this contract that she’s going to cause a scene, do you?”
Before Jared could answer, Chandler’s voice cut in, sounding confused. “Yvonne, who are you talking about?”
Yvonne’s heart skipped a beat. She looked up to find Chandler watching her with a complicated expression. She was panicking. She had no idea how much he’d overheard. “Chandler, you misheard me,” she lied through her teeth. “I was just telling Jared about my cousin. Right, Jared?”
“Is that so?” Chandler clearly didn’t buy it.
He had seen Tracy from a distance at the funeral. Even though it was just a glimpse, he’d known her for years; he was certain it was her. When he’d asked Yvonne about it later, she had been evasive. He’d even had his assistant look into their family tree, but nothing had turned up yet.
Hearing Yvonne mention Tracy now, and watching her warn Jared to stay on guard. It all started to click. Tracy must be a Xander, likely an illegitimate daughter. That would explain why Yvonne looked down on her so much.
Yvonne leaned into Chandler’s arm, resting her head on his wrist affectionately. “It’s true, Chandler. Trust me. Look over there, Mr. Waylon is here with the contracts. Let’s go!”
As Waylon walked in with his assistant, talking quietly, the reporters went into a frenzy, immediately starting their live broadcasts. Yvonne and her group hurried over, beaming. “Mr. Waylon, you’re here! Shall we get started with the signing?”

“Let’s just wait a while longer,” Waylon said, not even glancing at them. He walked straight past and headed for the podium.
Being snubbed like that stung, but Yvonne told herself it just proved they were the stars of the show and he was being professional. Her nerves finally settled. The White family hadn’t let her down; they had finally helped her crush that pest, Tracy.
Jared, however, felt a growing sense of dread. Waylon’s cold attitude, combined with Tracy’s calm presence, made his skin crawl. He felt like something terrible was about to happen. He glanced over at Tracy. It was just her and Sam, yet they seemed to radiate a confidence that filled the room. Was he just imagining it?
Waylon began his opening remarks. The live stream was flooded with comments from viewers.
“This is Mr. Waylon’s first time on a live stream! He’s really going all out to put our goddess Yvonne on the map. Love to see it.”
“Mr. Waylon is the man! He insisted on a live interview and full transparency for this signing. Truly inspiring.”
