Chapter 58
“This is…unexpected,” I find myself saying aloud.
“Meaning?” Kane asks as he looks up from the menu he’s been scanning.
“I didn’t think you’d bring me somewhere so – well – nice,” I explain, glancing around at the room again. Thank Goddess that I dressed appropriately for the occasion – this place reeks of money and status.
“I’m not a cheap date,” Kane offers plainly and a laugh escapes me.
“Yeah, but -”
We’re not a real couple.
I cut my words off, not wanting to finish my sentence in case anyone overhears me. After all, the point of this all is just to be seen out together.
“I figured I’ve kept you locked up long enough,” Kane states, setting down his menu. His green eyes land on me. Getting out once in a while never hurts. Plus, you don’t really know the area.”
It’s true. I don’t. Though Kane’s territory and my own pack’s are not that far apart, I’m still not familiar with this side.
“Have you been here before?” I ask him, referring to the restaurant,
He nods. “On special occasions.”
I raise a brow. “This qualifies as a special occasion?”
This time, he shrugs. “One could argue that it does.”
Again, I want to laugh. He’s always a little cryptic, which is annoying and intriguing.
Instead, I take a sip of my wine, falling quiet as the waiter returns and Kane handles ordering our appetizers. I figure he knows what’s good here, so I don’t fuss..
“The Alpha King was pleased with his visit,” Kane comments once the waiter is gone. “He said he was impressed with your abilities as Luna.”
My brows lift up. “Really?” I ask. “That’s surprising.”
Kane’s brow furrows in response. “Why?”
I scoff. “What do you mean why? All the drama with the reception,” I remind him. “It wasn’t exactly smooth sailing.”
Kane takes in my words, nodding slowly before he takes a drink from his wine. “I likely don’t have any place to talk,” he said. “Because I made my doubts none throughout the entire planning process.”
An understatement. He was trying to get me to step down at any chance that he had. All while continuously defending Bianca.
“But I meant what I said,” he continues. “You did well. I shouldn’t have doubted you.”
I breathe slowly, taking a moment to digest his words. It wasn’t necessarily an apology and his tone wasn’t soft, kind, or sappy. He was the ever-ruling Alpha he always was.

But his acknowledgement was…nice. Strangely encouraging.
“Thank you,” I reply.
That’s all I can offer him and that’s all he seems to want as he lets the conversation go and sips at his wine once
more.
The appetizers eventually arrive and my taste buds sing as the first bite hits my tongue.
“Oh my,” I begin. “This is so good.”
A hint of a smile plays on Kane’s lips, seemingly satisfied.
“I’m glad you like it,” he offers, clearly enjoying his own food as well.
We order our dinners – Kane gets the most expensive steak on the menu and I choose a lobster pasta. Once more, I’m in heaven after the first bite.
“Amazing,” I nearly moan. “I’ve never had lobster before.”
“Really?” Kane asks. “Then why did you order it? What if you didn’t like it?”
“Because I wanted to try something new,” I toss back. “Plus, everyone is always going on and on about how good it is.”
“Sure…,” he trails, studying me. “Do your parents not like seafood?”
I nearly drop my fork as his question catches me off guard. “W-what?” I ask
“I figured they weren’t fans…seeing as you’d never tried lobster,” he explains.
Oh,” I offer lamely. “Oh…um well, my mother is…was.”
I stop to swallow, trying not to show how talking about her affects me.
“But my father isn’t. After she passed…his focus was placed in certain places. Me trying new foods was not one of them,” I state.
Really, I wasn’t worthy of my father’s attention or focus as a whole. But I don’t tell Kane that. Instead, I take another bite of my lobster this one not tasting as delicious as the first.
