Chapter 59

“You and your mother were very close,” Kane says. He doesn’t ask, the words are meant as a statement.

Again, I swallow tightly. “Yes,” I reply, my voice quiet. I hate that it came out so weak.

I try to roll back my shoulders, hold my head high. But as I glance over at Kane, I struggle to shrug off the ache in my heart. He’s studying me, his gaze not judgmental but thoughtful…considerate.

It catches me completely off guard – he’s never looked at me this way before. But it’s still hard to read or figure

out.

“She was my favorite person in the entire world,” the words slip from my lips, causing my heart to jump due to my sudden vulnerability.

However, I don’t try to take the words back or wave them away. Not as Kane is still studying me, as if he’s also trying to put pieces together. He appears as if he’s about to say something, but he’s cut off as his phone rings.

“I need to step away for a moment,” he tells me as he checks the caller ID. “Keep enjoying your dinner.”

I give him a nod as he leaves the table before I do as he says. I savor every bite of my food and I enjoy the ambiance of the room, the classical music playing. After five minutes, Kane comes back to the table.

His jaw is tight as he takes his seat, his shoulders tense. It’s clear he’s not happy about whatever news he received during his phone call. He doesn’t even seem to care about the food on his plate.

“Everything okay?” I dare to ask, no longer interested in my food either.

Kane’s hard gaze clips to me, suddenly making me feel as if I’m the source of his annoyance. However, he then sighs.

“Not really,” he says, dragging a hand over his face. “Henri just informed me that a pack of rogue wolves was vandalizing and destroying public property near downtown.”

“Goddess,” I breathe. “That’s horrible. Did anyone get hurt?”

“A few civilians,” Kane replies, shaking his head. “Henri and some others are headed there now.”

“That’s…good,” I offer, trying to be encouraging. But Kane clicks his tongue, not seeming at all relieved.

“It’s a temporary fix,” he states, frustrated. “These rogue wolves have been causing problems for months endangering peoples’ lives, damaging property, and even destroying packs. Yet no one will help us fucking change it.”

I listen to him, soaking in his words and the passion behind each.

“What would you do about it?” I ask softly.

I can tell he’s thought about it – maybe even planned it all out. Kane’s eyes once again meet mine.

“Eliminate them,” he answers. “So they can’t hurt anyone or anything anymore. They need to be put down.”

Again, the passion and certainty behind his words knocks into me, causing my skin to buzz. I can’t help but nod.

“It’s clear how much you value your pack,” I tell him, meaning the words. I can see surprise flash through his eyes at my compliment.

“I do…,” he trails out, as if still trying to tell if I’m messing with him. But I go as far as offering the smallest smile.

Kane still seems stuck on my small kindness, which at least distracts him from his frustration. I take another bite of my food as the conversation ends, noting how Kane looks away from the table. He’s probably lost in thought, strategizing.

However, I’m startled when I suddenly feel his hand on my arm, his warmth coming toward me.

This time, I do drop my fork as I look up, just in time for his other hand to come to my face so his palms caresses my cheek.

“Evelyn…” he begins.

But he doesn’t finish as his face comes closer and my heart rate sky rockets.

Holy shit.

Is Kane going to kiss me!?
