Chapter 85

We’ve landed in quite an intimate position, our bodies lined up and pressed together. My breasts are pushed up against his chest, my pelvis against his. The way I’m panting only makes each touch worse.

I blink, trying to regain the use of my brain as I watch a full smile come over Kane’s lips. I hate the way it makes my inside swirl.

“I-I thought you were going to catch me,” I say, meaning for it to be a joke. But it’s more breathy, making it land different.

Still, Kane chuckles and I can feel the rumble of his laugh as our chests remain again each other.

“Well, that’s kind of hard when you just keep throwing yourself at me. I know I’m irresistible, but you could be a little more subtle,” he mocks, lifting his brows in insinuation. He shifts his hips then, as if he’s uncomfortable, but it makes him roll into me, the sensation of our bodies coming together a little too elating.

It’s then that my mind catches up with me and I jump into motion. I scramble out of Kane’s arms, slide clumsily off of him before I can also scoot away – putting distance between us.

It appears my awkwardness doesn’t go unnoticed as Kane sits up, laughing at me as he props himself up on his hands.

“Why are you so flustered?” Kane asks, causing me to scowl at him. He then studies me for a moment, a smile coming over his lips. The rare sight of it makes my stomach flip.

“Don’t tell me you’ve never been with a man before,” he drags out.

Again, my cheeks redden. “W-what? Of course I have!” I stumble out. “I’m not a virgin.”

I’m not. I’ve slept with someone before. The sex hadn’t exactly been great but still.

Kane hums at my words, but then shrugs. “Doesn’t matter. It’s not like our position had been sexual anyway.”

He then stands, moving on and walking away. However, I stay for a second, blowing out a wave of air as I sink into myself. Now I just feel silly.

Our training wraps up soon after that, and Kane and I leave the gym together.

“That was a good start,” Kane comments as we walk down the hall. “I’ll implement some more climbing training into your plan,”

“Whatever you say,” I state. “Maybe some fighting training would be good too?”

“Soon,” Kane offers. “You’re not going to be much use in a fighting ring if you don’t have the strength and muscle to back it up.”

I figure that’s fair. Plus, I don’t exactly love the idea of Kane kicking my ass in the fighting ring just yet. After all, we’ve only just started.

We continue to walk and I begin to ask Kane a question regarding endurance. However, my voice falls silent as we hear someone else. Someone who is speaking rather loud and proudly,

“I had the guards lock the door and leave their posts,” Bianca says with a loud laugh. “She couldn’t get in! Now she’ll miss her training with Kane and have to sleep outside!”

Bianca laughs again, joined by her entourage. They’re all sitting within one of the meeting rooms, which they’ve carelessly left open. It gives Kane and I a perfect window into the whole show.

However, as I see Bianca cheers her wine glass with Josie and share another laugh, I can’t stop myself from walking into the room.

The sight of me clearly shocks them all, causing Bianca to blink at me as I stop in front of them.

“You’re the reason the door was locked?” I ask. “Why am I not surprised?”

“H-how did you get in?” she asks, anger growing. However, her eyes then widen as the color drains from her face. – and I know why. Without even having to turn around, I know Kane has now entered the room behind me.

“Kane let me in,” I say, tilting my chin up.

“You locked her outside?” Kane follows, his tone empty of any amusement.

Bianca is rattled, her minions quiet as she struggles to come up with some sort of excuse. She then looks down to both our clothing, anger reddening her cheeks as she seems to realize we’re both dressed for a workout. Despite her efforts, we still trained together.

“I-I thought she wasn’t coming home tonight so I locked the door -” Bianca begins.

It’s all a complete back pedal to what she said previously, but I figure it doesn’t matter what she says. One way or another, Kane will probably buy it and protect her.

“You locked the door?” Kane asks, interrupting.

“Yes,” Bianca says. “To protect the house and -”

“But Evelyn should still be able to unlock the door, with the keys you gave her,” Kane presses, the annoyance in his tone surprising me. My eyes turn to him and I can see the tension in his jaw.

Meanwhile, Bianca’s eyes grow wide.

“Well, yes…,” she tries.

“But she couldn’t,” Kane continues. “Apparently her keys didn’t work.”

“I…um,” Bianca stumbles.

“Did you give her the wrong keys?” Kane presses, annoyed.

Bianca stays silent, her lip wobbling until she explodes. “Yes! But why should she have keys, anyway!? We can’t trust her, so I was keeping them safe!”

Wait…what? I’m supposed to have a set of keys to the house. Again, I take in this information, expecting Kane to understand Bianca’s reasoning, even if I know it’s bullshit.

But, instead, Kane speaks through clenched teeth.

“Those keys belong to the Luna of the pack,” he states. “You will hand over the right to Evelyn. Now.”

The whole room goes still, but with Kane’s anger filling up the space, Bianca seems too afraid to fight his wishes. She gets up and brings me the keys, sneering at me as she’s forced to place them into my palm.

“Kane -” she tries, pleading in her voice.

But Kane turns from the room, taking me with him. I swear I can feel the blades of Bianca’s knife-like stare as we leave.

However, that’s not what stays with me as I head back to my room. What lingers on my mind is the fact that Kane

didn’t humor Bianca this time. Instead…he helped me.

Strange.
