Alexander rested his hand on my shoulder. “Evelyn, you don’t have to prove anything to me when it comes to Kane,” he said.
“What do you mean?” I asked, turning to glance up at him.
“I mean that I’m fairly aware of the lack of connection the two of you have. This marriage between the two of you wasn’t due to mutual attraction or interest.”.
My nerves twisted and coiled.
“Alexander-”
“I’ve seen the way he treats you and acts around you,” he went on. “That’s not the kind of behavior that a man should have toward his wife.”
“I…Things between Kane and me are just complicated,” I said weakly.
Alexander all but scoffed. “Complicated? Come on, Evie, you can’t seriously tell me that you’re happy in this marriage.*
I pressed a hand to the side of my head, trying to fend off an oncoming headache. “Alexander, please. I really don’t want to have this discussion now. Alright? I’ve told you in the past that my relationship with Kane is none of your business.”
“Well, maybe it should be,” he stated.
I was baffled. “What?”
“Everyone can see how little he cares for you,” he pointed out.
“That’s not true.”
“Yes, it is,” he countered firmly. “All he cares about is taking down the rogues and strengthening his pack. When it comes to you and him, all anyone ever sees is pure obligation. You sit next to him during meetings and, sure, you’ll stand beside him during events. But nothing more.’
I bit the inside of my cheek. “So what?” I asked tensely.
“So what? Evelyn, don’t you believe that you deserve more than what you’re settling for? You can’t seriously tell me that there are genuine feelings between you and Kane. I don’t believe it, and I can’t imagine that anyone else does either.”
“Yeah, and that’s exactly the problem I’m trying to deal with,” I said bitterly. “Kane and I’s relationship is currently under a lot of stress, given the ongoing attacks. There is, however, a ton of gossip flying around the pack right now regarding the two of us.”
Alexander blinked back at me with slight surprise. “Really?”
“Yes,” I confirmed tensely. “Look, I’m glad that you’re able to lend a hand where you can at times. I appreciate the help you’re willing to give this pack, but maybe…I don’t know, maybe we should be seen working together so much going forward.”
His eyes widened in disbelief. One would have thought that I just tried to put an end to our friendship.
“You can’t be serious-”

I closed my eyes and let out a long, defeated breath. “Thank you.”
“But I will say this, rumors aside, I think it’s important for everyone to see that you have other ‘options’ apart from your so-called husband,” Alexander remarked. “If there ever comes a day when you’re finally fed up with being treated poorly by a guy who clearly doesn’t want you, I implore you to reach out to me. I will gladly sweep you off your feet and give you the life you deserve.”
I froze and was utterly speechless by his confession. Feeling flustered, I quickly turned on my heels and sped off to find Kane. I reached the door of his office and walked in to find Bianca pressed firmly against him with her lips inches away from his.
