Chapter 107
Evelyn’s POV
I will not be used as a pawn.
I could only assume that he’d been referring to how I kissed him in front of Alexander. I still felt bad about twisting the situation at the time. Yet, I had already explained my reasoning behind my actions to Kane.
He had left before I could give any proper response to his statement.
Aside from the rush of guilt, I also felt slightly rattled.
It was almost ironic that he would make such a remark, knowing my own position in all of this. A pawn?
I’d practically been a pawn my entire life. A spare piece to move around at someone else’s will. A means to an end. My own family treated me as such. When I signed that damned marriage contract, I partly felt as though I’d just become Kane’s pawn.
Yet, he had the gall to voice his own displeasure with the whole concept. If given the chance, I would have responded with my own cutting statement.
Kane’s words continued echoing in my head for the past two hours. I’d taken a quick shower and changed into something more comfortable. I debated over heading down to the medical ward to see if they were in need of an extra pair of hands.
But I decided last minute to give myself the rest of the afternoon to think some things over.
Kane’s lingering words and my own personal feelings on the matter of our newly developed plan.
“It has to work,” I muttered to myself.
Merely making my way out toward the gardens, I passed numerous small groups of staff members. They giggled and shared knowing, devious looks amongst themselves.
“I heard that they spent the whole morning working together,’ one of them hummed with a growing smirk.
“Yeah, Bianca told me that they left the sign-up station early and went behind one of the buildings to potentially hook up,’ another scoffed in offense. ‘I can’t believe she would have the audacity to treat Alpha Kane that way.’
‘Seriously! After everything he’s done to bring her into this pack,’ the third person affirmed. ‘She doesn’t even have full control of her wolf, and yet, she thinks she can fool around with whoever she wants.’
My steps nearly faltered as my heart dropped into my stomach. These malicious rumors were undoubtedly spread by Bianca and her mindless cronies.
This was the sole reason why Kane and I needed to put on a better act. While nothing intimate transpired between Alexander and me, everyone was able to pick up on the cordiality between the two of us. But not when it came to Kane.
I couldn’t just pass it off as a mindless little chatter. It was gossip like this that was quick to spread around like wildfire, and put our shared plan to an immediate end, Bianca’s meddling had to be stopped.
“Hey, Evie! Wait up!”
I glanced over my shoulder and met Alexander’s warm eyes. His legs picked up into a soft jog until he was at my
side.

I let out a tired breath and kept my eyes locked on the stone path in front of me. “What brings you out here?”
I didn’t want to come off as rude, but this was exactly what I needed to avoid. Close friends or not, Alexander and I couldn’t keep meeting up like this.
It would completely defeat the purpose of trying to show everyone that Kane and I were the actual couple.
“What’s wrong?” As usual, Alexander was able to pick up on my behavior quicker than anyone.
I gently shook my head. “Nothing really.”
He nudged my shoulder. “You know I could always tell when you’re lying,” he said. A small smile tugged at his mouth. “Is this about when you and I arrived back earlier?”
Damn.
My heart rate started to pick up. There was no escaping the conversation again if he was to bring up Kane and I’s lack of intimate connection. It wasn’t like I could run off and plant another kiss on the man to avoid conversation.
