Chapter 106

Evelyn’s POV
I couldn’t help but lift my head up and stare blankly back at the man beside me. Kane seriously wanted my advice? My suggestion?
“Really?” I asked dubiously.
A short moment ago, I was thoroughly convinced that he was pissed off at me for having overstepped some unspoken boundary.
I just couldn’t think of any other way to keep Alexander from picking up on the damn truth.
Not for nothing, part of me still felt a bit of guilt for making such an impulsive move.
I suppose I should consider it to be my penance. Well, that. And I was currently trying to repress the effects of that darnned kiss we shared before. I never anticipated Kane to play into it so well.
Kane half rolled his eyes and scoffed. “Well, it’s not as if how we were carrying on before was doing much good.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat and nodded. I angled my shoulders to face him head-on.
“Look, even though I’ve been given the title of ‘Luna’, there is still this emotional wall between us that is very visibly apparent to others,” I explained. “We’re never affectionate to one another whenever we’re in public.”
“Surely there have been moments-”
“Standing next to you during events does not count,” I remarked firmly.
Kane raised a singular brow. “Point taken.”
I let out a humorless laugh and leaned back on my elbows. “I mean, let’s face the obvious. You and I hardly speak to each other in front of others over non-official pack matters.”
There was virtually nothing real about us as a couple. Of course, why would there be? The whole matter was forged through a contract. One that was meant to be mutually beneficial; however, it was proving a lot harder to maintain than we expected.
“So then, tell me what it is that you’re suggesting,” he prompted.
“Touch me.”
“What??” Kane sputtered.
I suddenly broke out into a series of small coughs while trying to form a proper sentence. Kane’s wide-eyed expression was both humorous and well-deserved.
As soon as I cleared my throat, I took in a large breath and spoke. “What I meant to say was, don’t be afraid to reach out for my hand on occasion. Or even feel free to place your hand on either my shoulder or my hip when we’re standing close,”
“That’s it?” he questioned shortly.
I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Well, no,” I sighed, “Those are merely light suggestions. What I plan on saying next may require more thought and effort on your part.”
Kane sagged his shoulders. “Oh, boy.”

I bit the inside of my cheek, wavering for a brief moment. How on earth he was going to respond to this next idea, I had no idea…
“You may want to consider choosing a pet name for me,” I told him.
I watched an array of emotions cross over his face before settling on what looked like uncertainty.
“Really? I mean, would that seriously make a difference? Most, if not all, of the pack are used to me just referring to you by your regular name. Won’t it raise some suspicion if I automatically started addressing you by some silly name?”
I was a little put off by his initial rejection of the idea. I guess, part of me was hoping he’d find the concept manageable. The alpha could likely bring down a small group of rogues by himself, yet picking a pet name for his wife was beyond his control.
There again, he may have been onto something there.
“Hmm, you may have a point there,” I commented. “The whole point of this is to convince people that we’re a genuine couple. For us to suddenly start acting so outwardly different toward each other would end up raising alarm.”
That was the last thing we needed.
I flexed my neck, gently stretching my head to either shoulder.
“Alright. We’ll put a pin in the whole pet name idea for the moment,” I contemplated. “Instead, let’s just go back to implementing those subtle touches here and there. And with that, it wouldn’t hurt to be around each other more frequently.”
Aline formed between his brows, leading me to elaborate.
“Yes, I know that we’ve been training and attending more meetings as the heads of the pack. But, those are things that aren’t necessarily seen as intimate…Do you get it? Maybe we could actually meet outside of training?”
“That’s what our date nights are for,” he huffed.
I shook my head and rolled my eyes. Goddess, I didn’t think that this conversation was going to be this difficult.
“Yeah, those so-called ‘date nights’ that end in nothing but arguing and are plastered all over the front page tabloids. I think I’ll pass,” I retorted dryly.
To my surprise, Kane actually tilted his head away, trying to hide the abashed look on his face.
“Yeah, you’re right.”
I propped myself up until I was leaning back against the headboard of the bed. “I mean, really? How hard could it possibly be to carry out this kind of a plan?”
He stood up from his corner of the mattress and stretched his arms over his head.
“Not hard at all,” he remarked lightly, “Easy as hell, I can imagine. I’ll be sure to be convincing in the future.”
I bit the inside of my cheek, holding back a discernible noise. Part of me really wanted to ask him how he was going to achieve that. Each suggestion I had made to him was met with a silent look of trepidation.
There was no ignoring the doubt that settled into my gut.
What I was suggesting was essentially an easy thing to accomplish. Well… It was supposed to be easy. Simple even

for someone who was emotionally open and not a mentally closed-off alpha whose sole priority lay in the hunting of rogues.
Was Kane capable of this? I wanted him to be.
Our private conversations during our training sessions were proof that he and I were capable of having real discussions. So, why couldn’t we have more of them just in public spaces?
All it was meant to do was knock off any suspicion or doubt about the two of us. In the back of my mind, I knew that Bianca would always be an issue. She was, and had always been, the first person to deny any connection between Kane and me.
The chances of convincing her of anything were slim. But we needed to start somewhere. The last thing we needed to deal with was to have her and Alexander spreading word around. If it got to that point, then there would be zero chance of recovery.
“I’m going to head back to the office and get some work done,” Kane announced.
I was pulled from my train of thought and nodded. “Alright. I think I’m going to take a shower and change out of these clothes.”
I slid off the bed and made my way to the bathroom. His voice made me stop short.
“One last thing,” he started. I hadn’t missed the feral gleam in his eyes. “Regardless of how we choose to proceed with this plan. Understand this, I will not be used as a pawn.”
