Chapter 105
Kane’s POV
I spent the majority of my morning hunched over my desk, buried nearly up to my chin in both public complaints and plans for dealing with the rogues.
I let out a harsh, frustrated breath. The issue felt like it was never-ending. Just when we think we have a handle on things, something else happens. My mind still hasn’t been able to overcome the incident during the Midsummer Festival.
A crease formed between my brows. And if that wasn’t enough, the other half of my mind had become sorely enveloped by the thought of Evelyn and Alexander.
The image of seeing Evelyn smiling and laughing so freely around that damn prince bothered me in some kind of unspoken way.
‘Our little wolf is so pretty when she smiles.’
My mouth pulled into an irritated sneer. Gods, how pathetic.
‘I didn’t hear you denying it.’
“Enough,” I snarled to myself. I had no real reason to even be thinking about either of them. Not when I had real problems to be dealing with. All Evelyn and Alexander were doing was working for the blood drive. Nothing more.
The next hour and a half passed with forcible determination until one of the guards stopped by to inform that Evelyn had returned. I got up from my desk and headed toward the front doors. I watched the car pull up; both Evelyn and Alexander stepped out.
“Sir,” one of the staff called out.
I turned my attention to them, but I barely comprehended whatever it was they were telling me…Something about moving the cars into the garages? I had no idea, nor did I really care.
Every instinct within me had me turning back, knowing that Evelyn was heading right toward me.
“Hi, baby!” she exclaimed with a too-wide smile.
My brows raised. Baby?! I was at a loss for words. What the hell? Since when the fuck did we exchange pet names?
More concerningly, why the hell did it make my wolf hum with gracious approval?
Just as I was about to confront the issue, Evelyn’s hands reached out to grip the material of my shirt. Pulling me forward, she stopped within less than an inch. My heart slammed in my chest as a wave of anticipation rippled through me.
But the press of her lips never came. Why did she stop?
“Just go with it,” she whispered.
Wait, what? Evelyn pushed herself up on the tips of her toes and pressed her lips to mine. The air stalled in my chest, and all of my nerves formed into knots. I had half a mind to pull her away. But no.
At first, my muscles had gone completely stiff as though I had no idea what to do. But that startling, icy feeling started to melt and was eagerly replaced with an unexpected warmth.
Within seconds, my hands curled around her waist. I pulled her closer against my chest while taking in the

delicious taste I never knew I’d been missing out on. Like vanilla and berries.
I quickly seized the opportunity and deepened the kiss by sweeping my tongue past her lips. Evelyn’s soft moan hit my ears like the finest music ever to be played.
‘Yes! Closer! Need to get closer.’ My wolf snarled with need. ‘Need to feel her perfect, plush body against ours. Tear her clothes off!”
Wait…Hold on.
‘Need to have her pinned down to the mattress with her hands above her head.’
Stop. This, all of this, needed to stop.
It was almost impossible to keep my thoughts straight from these erratic feelings. Something was off about this whole thing. This goddamned kiss.
It wasn’t real. None of it. No… It was for show. That sweet, luscious feeling swiftly turned bitter in my mouth. I snagged my hand through Evelyn’s wavy hair and tilted her head firmly to the side. There stood Alexander, leaning against the car door.
Ah, so that’s what this was all about, I thought darkly. Something must have been said by Alexander to make Evelyn take such drastic and sudden measures.
Well, then. Perhaps I ought to level the playing field.
I swiftly hooked my hands under Evelyn’s thighs and swept her off her feet. Ignoring the yelps that slipped from the back of her throat, I carried us back into the house and marched straight to our bedroom.
Just as I slammed the door shut behind us, I practically tossed Evelyn onto the bed in a huff.
I could hardly believe it. It all seemed like such a silly, pointless thing that I shouldn’t have been bothered by it.
Yet, I was.
Not that I was planning on ever sharing any real intimate moments with Evelyn; however, I refused to be used merely to prove a point to someone. But at the same time, I didn’t like the thought of Alexander sticking his nose in on our business.
Evelyn let out a harsh breath. Her eyes were wide with questionable hurt, while her cheeks were flushed with a dark pink color. “Seriously,” she hissed.
“Don’t you dare play the victim here,” I snarled. “What the hell was that out there?”
“L”
My voice came out harsh. “Let me guess, Alexander made some sort of remark regarding our relationship, and you thought to prove him wrong? Am I right?”
Her blush darkened. This time, she lowered her head.
“Alexander,” she began.
The corners of my eyes twitched. That bastard was getting on my last nerve,
“He’s managed to pick up on several notes regarding our ‘so-called’ relationship.”
I clenched my jaw. “Oh, I have no doubt,” I muttered.

Evelyn narrowed her eyes. “Kane! This contracted marriage you roped us into-We’re not convincing enough,” she stated firmly. “He’s managed to pick up on our lack of intimacy with one another.”
I ran a hand over my face. “So, you took it upon yourself to take matters into your own hands.”
“… Was it so horrible?”
Her voice sounded so small. Fragile.
I lifted my head up to find Evelyn eagerly eyeing the carpet, not quite willing to look me in the eyes.
Something inside of my chest twisted.
“No,” I answered. The kiss wasn’t what was horrible. It was the reasoning behind it that stung.
“If Alexander finds out the truth about the nature of our relationship, it could get back to the king and end up unraveling everything,” she explained.
I sat down next to her on the bed, feeling puzzled. She had a point. With all of the recent attacks and compiling pressures, the last thing I needed was to have to deal with everyone asking questions.
“You’re right,” I conceded. We had to figure something out.
I turned to glance at Evelyn. My gaze fell to the not-so-subtle way she took her bottom lip between her teeth. Her look of concentration always drew my attention.
My train of thought became lost to me. The idea of wanting to pull her lip free and steal another kiss from her. I clenched my hands into fists at my side.
My Gods. Was I already losing myself to my more primal side? It was only a damn kiss.
I roughly cleared my throat, shaking the pointless thoughts from my mind.
“How should we go about being more convincing then?” I asked her.
