Chapter 110

Evelyn’s POV

My mouth fell open in complete shock.

I could hardly believe that Kane, of all people, had the nerve to make such an ugly assumption about my relationship with Alexander. Deep down, he had to have known that the prince and I were no more than friends. Always had been.

Well, there again, I still couldn’t fully comprehend the subtle confession that Alexander had made to me. Was he being serious? Oh Goddess, surely he wasn’t just taking pity on me, given my situation.

But now, to deal with this issue with Kane. I didn’t know how much more aggravation I could handle in one day.

My voice came out low. “So, this is truly your opinion of me,” I muttered.

“It’s no brighter than your opinion of me,” he countered back with a mean smirk.

I bit back the slew of words that I wanted to throw back at him. Yet, I was resolved to maintain what little energy I had left.

“There’s a clear, definitive difference between my relationship with Alexander and your relationship with Bianca,” I told him. “Unlike you, I’ve never slept with Alexander-nor has the thought ever crossed my mind. He has always been a kind and faithful friend who cares about my well-being, as well as my feelings, unlike certain people.”

I watched the anger leave his features, Kane suddenly straightened his shoulder, yet remained silent.

My upper lip twitched with anger. “Again, unlike you and Bianca, I actually tried to draw a line between Alexander and myself when it came to our appearance in public. I told him that he and I shouldn’t be working together so much in the future due to the fact that it’s been giving people the wrong impression.”

He raised his brows, not knowing what to say.

“Meanwhile, the whole goddamn house openly knows that Bianca is in your office, no doubt trying to get your clothes off,” I mocked.

Kane pinched the bridge of his nose. “I told you that nothing happened-”

“Do you honestly think it really matters whether or not something did or didn’t happen?” I questioned back with exasperation. “Because of your explicit past with her, which everyone is aware of, she has made it impossible for me to gain any real standing within this pack. Bianca is under the illusion that she’s the one who’s in charge. The rules don’t apply to her, do they?”

His forehead furrowed in growing annoyance. “That’s not true. Come on, Evelyn. You’re being ridiculous.”

I slowly shook my head and let out a tired laugh. “You know well enough all the things she’s tried to do to make my position impossible in this pack. And each time, she walks away without facing a single consequence,” I explained. “But I really thought that the least you could do was keep her at a respectable distance, given the plan we’re trying to carry out.”

I should have known that he wouldn’t have extended the same courtesy. Why would he? His history with Bianca suppressed our own by a landslide,

How foolish of me, I thought bitterly.

1 turned around and began walking toward the door. Kane snagged my wrist, refusing to let me leave.

“Don’t you dare turn your back on me,” he snarled.

I was in no mood to stay and deal with the pointless mess. With all my pent-up anger and newly developed strength, I tore myself from his grasp. I peered at him from over my shoulder.

“Watch me,” I growled. “Every time I feel like we make any progress, there’s always something that comes up and messes everything up. Why is that?”

Without giving him the chance to properly answer, I left.

That evening, I chose to eat dinner in the most secluded corner of the dining hall. I didn’t have it in me to face Alexander so soon after our tearful encounter. And I certainly didn’t want to deal with Kane.

If he and I couldn’t find a middle ground, then there was no point in trying to move forward with our plan. Perhaps, it wasn’t worth pursuing after all.

I could have sat with Diana and the others from the medical ward. But chances were they would have seen right through my facade of pretending to be okay. And I wasn’t.

Having barely picked at my food, I thought it best to simply head back to my private room. As I wound through the hallways, my narrow concentration was shattered when I saw a group of staff members gingerly moving boxes and piles of clothes out of the room I’d been staying in.

What the hell?!

“Stop,” I said bluntly. “Where are you taking my things?”

“Back to the master bedroom, Luna Evelyn,” one of the maids answered.

I let out a shuddering breath. “Who authorized this?”

“I did,” a deep voice said from beside me.

My muscles grew tense as I instantly came to recognize the unwanted presence next to me.

Kane.

His expression was hardened like stone with his arms crossed over his chest. He was every bit the unyielding alpha that countless were intimidated by. But not me. No, I was still fairly annoyed with him to be nervous.

I spoke through clenched teeth. “Is this really necessary?”

! The whole purpose of my private room was to ensure I was properly resting during my recovery after the

Midsummer Festival. However, I’d grown accustomed to living alone and wasn’t in any mood to have to give that

up,

“Indeed, it is,” he answered curtly.

“And if I refuse this unwanted change?”

The man scoffed, “I won’t have the members of this house thinking that their Luna and Alpha aren’t close and devoted to each other.”

I let out a snort. “Ah, yes. And this is your grand solution for disproving that idea,” I said tauntingly. “How convincing.”

Kane shot me a look that would have frightened any one of his guards. Yet, I remained unyielding.

I didn’t care how cynical I sounded. I wasn’t going to simply forget how bothered I was by our earlier encounter.

“Fine,” I said quietly.

Let him think that I was going to go along with this idea, I thought to myself.

After the staff had moved all of my belongings back to Kane’s room, I went over to the wardrobe and took out one of the night shirts and a pair of shorts. I could feel his eyes lingering on me as I moved about the room.

Once I was finished up in the bathroom, I noticed he’d been lounging on the bed with his back pressed up against the headboard. The somewhat self-satisfied look on his face had not escaped my notice.

Not speaking a single word, I headed straight for the bedroom door. Kane instantly sat up.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” he hissed. “Where the hell do you think you’re going now?”

“Does it really matter?” I asked. “Most of the house has already turned in for the night. Who will be any the wiser that I’m not actually in the same room as you?”

I offered a cold smile and slipped out of the room.

Checkmate.
