Chapter 111

Kane’s POV

The anger that gnawed at my insides, watching Evelyn slip away, for the second time that day, was utterly inhuman. My wolf was so close to the surface, I felt like he was seconds away from taking control.

Knowing his blind compulsion toward the woman, he would have mindlessly bounded after and begged for her to come back.

Don’t. Beg.

‘Well, I believe it would be in our best interest if you did,’ my wolf advised. ‘I refuse to let this awful feeling fester between our mate and us.’

1 scowled. “She’s the one who blew everything out of proportion earlier.”

*She was upset before she came into the office. Surely, you noticed how red her eyes were.’

I did. Truthfully, I had every intention of asking her what was wrong. However, I hadn’t anticipated getting verbally attacked.

“You and I both know that Bianca has been nothing but hostile toward Evelyn. She takes every opportunity to get under her skin.’

Evelyn’s previous words echoed through my head on an endless reel.

“…Because of your explicit past with her, which everyone is aware of, she has made it impossible for me to gain any real standing within this pack…Bianca is under the illusion that she’s the one who’s in charge…The rules don’t apply to her, do they…”

Yes, Bianca and I had history. We’ve known each other for years, and it wasn’t something that I could just easily drop or diminish.

‘And yet, our feelings toward the Alpha Prince are somehow different?’

Hostility. Venomous irritation.

“…Jealousy,’ he muttered.

I practically lunged forward, tumbling off the mattress in a useless heap.

My face pinched with blatant denial. “Jealous?! I am not jealous of

“Well, you might not be. But I don’t favor the way our little wolf looks whenever she’s around him,’ my wolf snarled. His uneasiness came through clear as day. ‘She lights up every time he speaks to her. As if the bastard set the damn stars in the sky.’

The longing that my wolf held toward Evelyn was really beginning to cripple me. What started out as a dull ache in my chest developed into a painful twist between my ribs. Each and every time she spared me a look filled with anger and contempt, it struck me hard.

It was a feeling that I tried to ignore. I didn’t have time to deal with such frugal things. I had a pack to run-the ongoing rogue attacks that kept appearing like unwanted scars on the community.

‘As our rightful mate, she is one of our top priorities,’ my wolf interrupted. ‘And I refuse to go another night without her!’

My lips pulled into an irritable sneer. A tight growl tore from the back of my throat. I got to my feet. A few long strides and I was at the door.

The hallway was pitch black with only a few dim lights glowing in the distance.

I was careful to keep my movements light and as quiet as possible. Rounding each corner, I entered a new hallway and began trying each doorknob. Locked. All of them were locked.

This wasn’t exactly surprising, given that I put the order out to keep all unused rooms locked to keep things more orderly. Nevertheless, my search continued.

By the end of the second hallway, I checked out, I had no idea how much time had gone by or if I was any closer to finding Evelyn.

I rubbed a hand roughly down my face. “Goddamnit,” I muttered under my breath. “Where the hell are you, you stubborn woman?”

I took two steps before feeling the mild impact of someone slamming into me. A small, feminine yelp bounced off the walls, while I scrambled to catch whoever it was.

“Oh! Alpha Kane,” the woman squeaked. “My apologies!”

From what I could tell, due to the overcast, shadows around us, it was only Hattie, one of the maids.
