Chapter 117

He wasn’t wrong.

“You deserve to have some time around those that you feel safe and familiar with,” he concluded.

My throat grew dry, and the corners of my eyes were dotted with tears. But none of it was out of sadness. Quite the opposite.

I had no idea Kane had been paying that close attention to me. I was so utterly touched by his concern that my hands were practically itching to reach out for him.

Alpha cares! Alpha wants us to be happy, my wolf chanted,

“But, what about the medical ward? The patients? I feel bad leaving Diana and the others, having just returned to work.”

“I’m sure they’ll understand,” he said. “Plus, it’s only going to be two days, the medical ward will carry on as it has been.”

I found it hard to argue when his tone held so much certainty. I bit the corner of my lip. “…Alright.”

Kane granted me what seemed like something exceedingly rare. An honest, admirable smile.

It eased whatever lingering worries I had for the moment and allowed me to feel genuinely excited about visiting my mother’s friends.

By the end of the week, I made sure the work schedule had been properly re-organized and that my bags were packed. As I waited at the door for the car to come around, I was surprised when Kane appeared next to me.

‘honestly hadn’t expected him to send me off-not when the paperwork had been piling up on his desk. I knew how busy he was and was more than willing to reach out to him once I got to Cheryl’s.

My eyes grew wide as he rested his hand on my lower back and guided us down the front stairs. Anyone who was around stopped what they were doing to catch the striking scene. It felt so…Intimate.

He’s just following through on the plan, Evelyn.

Kane placed my bag in the trunk while I got into the back seat. My surprise furthered when he took his spot in the open seat next to me. My questionable look prompted him to explain.

“Although I may not be able to spend the whole weekend, I can spare the time to at least make sure you get there safely.”

All I could do was nod. Yet on the inside, my nerves were vibrating. It was so strange being on the receiving end of Kane’s care and concern.

I worried that one day I’d become too accustomed to it. Once it was all over, it would end up tearing me in half.

We spent the majority of the car ride in comfortable silence. Within the hour, the car pulled through a large set of gates that drove up to the grand estate. Both the size and prestige rivaled Kane’s.

When the car came to a stop in front of the main walkway, I slid out and went for my bag in the back. Kane rolled down the window.

“I’ll make sure that there’s a car that comes for you on Sunday,” he said.

I easily nodded, and for a brief second, I paused. I wasn’t sure what else I was expecting as far as a ‘goodbye’. Part

of me was secretly wondering if Kane would reach over and kiss me.

There again, he had no real reason to. As far as I was aware, the two of us were alone.

I turned my head before my blush became too noticeable.

The front doors opened, and I was eagerly met by Cheryl, Brook, and Angie. Their warm smiles calmed my nerves, but only briefly.

“Oh, Evelyn, we’re so glad you came,” Brooke cooed.

“Perhaps, now we can finally discuss the nature of your marriage to Alpha Kane,” Cheryl remarked firmly.
