Chapter 116
Evelyn’s POV
I didn’t know what possessed me to blurt out that question.
I think, given the emotional day I’d been through, my mind had finally cracked. What little reservation I had must have run out.
Kane only stared at me, leaving the question to float in the air between us. I wasn’t sure what kind of an answer I was expecting.
Had he kissed me to adhere to the plan we’d agreed on? Was it because he noticed the way Bianca was antagonizing me, and he felt pity? Or…Could it have been for some other reason entirely?
Was it… Perhaps, at all possible…He could have kissed me because he genuinely wanted to?
Oh, my Goddess. Why would I even humor such a ridiculous idea? Of course, he didn’t have any real feelings toward me.
A new ache bloomed in my chest that I wasn’t prepared for. I felt my face flush as the silence bore on.
“Never mind, I’ll see you in a little while,” I stammered.
I practically flew out of his office and closed the door behind me.
Way to go, Evelyn. You finally manage to clear the air between each other, and then you go ahead and make things awkward again!
I headed back to the medical ward as I previously mentioned. All I could do was hope that by the time I was due to return for dinner, Kane would have already forgotten my stupid question.
Having finished up with work for the day, I said my brief goodbyes to Diana and the rest of the group. “Do you wanna head to dinner with us?” Diana asked.
“No thanks, I’m actually having dinner with Kane tonight,” I said.
Diana’s expression lit up with pure excitement. “Oh! That’s great! I’ll check in with you tomorrow, then.
If only I could get past the bubbling anticipation in my stomach.
From there, I decided to quickly head back to the bedroom to change into a fresh pair of clothes. When it came time to head back to Kane’s office, I willed my nerves under control.
“It’s just dinner,” I told fnyself.
I knocked on the door and slipped inside. Looking around, the room was dim apart from the soft lighting that came from the lamp on his desk, Kane stood in front of the large window on the far side of the room.
He appeared deep in thought, and I hesitated to interrupt him. But he easily sensed my presence anyway.
“This trip to your mother’s friend’s estate this weekend…” he started. “…I don’t think I’ll be able to attend with you.”
My stomach sank with disappointment. “Oh.”
་་
“You see, based on all the documents and data that’s been coming in, I fear that there could very well be another rogue attack in the works,” he explained calmly. “There’s no chance that I could simply take a break and leave for

a few days. Not now, at least.”
“I understand,” I told him. “In the morning, I’ll send a response back to Cheryl. I’ll tell her that now isn’t a good time for-“}
“I still want you to go,” Kane announced.
I froze. “What?”
“I want you to still go on the trip. You deserve to take a break.”
“A break? Kane, I just resumed my work down in the medical ward,” I said. “I’m sure Cheryl will understand, especially given the circumstances around the Midsummer Festival.”
He let out a long breath and kept his shoulders squared. “Evelyn, take the trip. I know that the integration of coming into this pack hasn’t been the easiest. You’ve gone through various trials, it seems, and you’ve never shied away from any of it,” he said softly.
“Your dedication knows no bounds, and although I know you’ve made friends here. I can tell that you still feel disconnected.”
