Chapter 122

I took my bottom lip between my teeth and hesitated to answer.

“…Yes,” I whispered.

He fell into silence while my stomach churned in knots. I hadn’t ever thought that I would feel guilty toward Kane for someone calling him out on his own unpleasant behavior.

Kane lowered his gaze to the comforter, looking chastised.

“Kane, I don’t… You need to know that I’ve never thought you were anything like my father,” I told him firmly.

He parted his lips to respond, only to close his mouth a few seconds later. I swiftly took the opportunity to further

my argument.

“You’re nothing like him,” I stated. He shot me a brief look of self-doubt. “Alright, I’ll admit, our first encounter wasn’t ideal. I mean, we didn’t know each other prior to that wedding.

He pinched the bridge of his nose and grimaced.

Okay, this conversation is rapidly taking a bad turn.

I quickly sat up and held my hands out. “Okay, okay. Hold on…What I’m trying to say is that, unlike my father, you are willing to help me get better.” I lowered my hand to his arm. “Between the doctor’s appointments and the ongoing training, you’ve been willing to help my wolf heal from all the trauma that my own family inflicted.”

This had Kane lifting his head to look at me. The pain around his eyes had lessened.

“I was…Ashamed of being paired with someone who didn’t have a functioning wolf,” he said quietly. His voice cracked with emotion that I had never heard from him. “I thought that fate had been playing just a cruel joke.”

“I can see why you would have felt that way—”

“Then how could you possibly think that I’m better than your father?” he questioned sharply.

“For the simple fact that you care about my safety and well-being.”

Kane was struck silent once more. One would have thought that I’d called him out on a secret he’d been safe- keeping for years. The corner of my mouth lifted into a soft smile.

“Kane, you wouldn’t be here, right now, if it wasn’t to ensure my safety, given the rogue attacks,” I pointed out.” Speaking of which, what can you tell me about this most recent attack?”

This change of topic allowed him to relax his shoulders. Yet, there was no mistaking the distress that crossed his features. “Gods, Evelyn…It’s fucking insane. According to Henri, they’re even more mindless than ever before. They were reported to be attacking local businesses all along the main public hub in town.”

“Did they seem to be working toward any particular plan?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Nothing that we could have deciphered. They were just causing pure chaos.”

“This feral behavior…I wish there was a way we could find out the root cause of it all.”

“You make it sound like they’ve been infected by something.”

“I believe they have been,” I concluded. I lowered my head to the pillow. “If there’s any chance we’d be able to uncover the cause of these rogues’ behavior, maybe there’s a way we can stop it at the source.”

It was a wishful thought.

Kane merely shrugged. “Honestly, if it could be proven, then I wouldn’t be entirely against the idea. Anything to stop the chaos. Before I got here, I was informed that we were able to bring in a few they managed to capture.”

“I’m sure you’ll get more information when we return tomorrow,” I said.

“You’re right.”

He lowered himself down to his pillow and clicked off the lamp on the night table. As we lay there in the darkness, I impulsively turned and placed a light kiss on his cheek.

“I appreciate you coming to get me.”
