Evelyn’s POV
I patiently waited until everyone had gone to their rooms that evening. I changed into my usual sleepwear and got myself ready for bed. However, I had no real intention of staying in my room.
As soon as I was certain everyone had settled down for the night, I quietly slipped from my guestroom to make my way to Kane’s room.
The hallways were barely lit with just a few spare candles scattered around. I moved silently on the tips of my toes, ensuring that no one would hear me. I could only imagine the kind of scolding I would end up getting from Cheryl if she were to catch me in the act.
The mere thought sent chills down my spine.
There again, it also had me filled with excitement. It was as though I was a teenager again, sneaking out of the house to go meet up with some friends.
Thankfully, I overheard Cheryl mention to her beta, Marshall, where Kane would be spending the night. We were on the same floor, yet he was placed on the complete other side of the house.
The walk felt endless until I finally came to the last door at the end of the hallway. I ever-so-gently tapped on the door.
A few seconds passed before Kane opened the door. His eyes widened in disbelief at my standing there.
“What are you-”
“Shhh.” I quickly shushed him and ushered into his room with a devious grin on my face.
I waited until he’d shut the door before speaking aloud.
“I hadn’t anticipated how long it was going to take me to get here,” I confessed, feeling slightly winded.
Kane’s shocked expression easily melted into one of pride and amusement. “So, this was your plan the whole time, huh? Go to your room and wait until everyone else goes to bed before making your move?”
I sheepishly smiled. “Pretty much.” I felt a slight blush creep across my cheeks. “I may have also wanted to apologize on behalf of most of the women here tonight.”
His brows pulled together. “For what?”
“For the hostility. I have no doubt you felt as soon as you arrived,” I pointed out.
Kane slowly nodded as he sat down on the corner of the bed. He took a moment to choose his next words carefully.
“It’s no mystery that your mother’s friends are not fond of me,” he acknowledged evenly.
“They’re rather ‘protective’ when it comes to me,” I said. “I think it has a lot to do with how my mother’s marriage was with my father.”
“How do you mean?” he asked.
Before I answered, I made my way over to the other side of the bed. I pulled back the covers and graciously climbed in. Although today may not have been physically harrowing, emotionally speaking I was exhausted.
“From what I was able to gather from the other guests tonight, my parents’ marriage was rather strained. More

often than not. My father had always been resentful toward my mother for her natural status as an Alpha. And my mother never showed much trust in him to really ever let him get involved in pack matters.”
Kane took his position next to me and sat back against the headboard. “That must have been difficult living with that kind of dynamic.”
“It was at times,” I admitted. “For what it’s worth, my mother was right in the end. In the event of her passing, my father had proceeded to drive our pack to utter ruin. He practically demolished everything my mother had spent her life building.”
Whenever I spoke about anything regarding my mother, Kane almost always shifted into a different kind of demeanor. One that held a lot more patience and soft understanding.
It was one of the reasons why I felt so compelled to defend his character earlier to the others. Everyone mostly knew Kane for his ruthless, domineering behavior. They knew him as only ‘Alpha Kane’.
Kane looked as though he was slowly working the parallels through his head. “Are you saying that based on your mother’s marriage, everyone thinks that you’ve been paired into a similar situation with me?”
