Chapter 126
Evelyn’s POV
All I had to do was wait…
The rest of the day dragged on as I carried out my usual duties. Once I decided on returning to the medical ward after hours, I had to ensure that no one knew of my plan.
I was partially grateful for the fact that Kane was too busy to take dinner with me. Because I was basically plotting to do something that was insanely dangerous, I couldn’t risk him potentially catching on.
By the time it came for us to settle in for the night, I made sure to set aside a new pair of clothes I would easily be able to put on as soon as I was able to slip out of the room. With Kane finishing up in the bathroom, I quickly climbed into bed and turned off my lamp on the nightstand.
There was no mistaking the sheer exhaustion that was plastered across his face. Kane nearly dragged his feet with every step before flopping down on the mattress in a dramatic heap.
I bit back a laugh. “You’ve gone through a lot today,” I acknowledge.
“I don’t have the energy to read through any last reports,” he muttered into the bed comforter.
I offered a soft smile. “For all that’s gone on lately, you’re entitled to head to bed early, don’t you think?”
He gave me a non-committal noise and slid beneath the covers. As soon as he switched off his own lamp on his side, the room became encapsulated in darkness. Luckily for me, it only took a few minutes before I heard Kane’s breathing even out.
He was asleep.
Now is my chance.

I, ever-so-carefully, slid out from under the blankets and waited until both of my feet were firmly planted on the floor before standing up. I stuffed my spare set of clothes under my arm and tiptoed over to the door.
My breath was locked in my lungs until I heard the gentle ‘click’ of the door shut behind me.
I took advantage of the surrounding darkness and quickly changed into my pair of scrubs. I half-hugged the wall as I cautiously moved through the hallways.
I made it down to the medical ward, feeling every bit of a thief in the night. I passed through the main doors with ease and took a moment to briefly check over the other patients while I was there.
When it came to the restricted areas, I had to be far more careful. I slowly peeked my head around the corner, where I expected several armed soldiers to be patrolling the doors. However, I was utterly shocked to discover that it was only one guard…Who was fast asleep.
Slipping off my flats, my movements became virtually silent. I moved past the soldier with sharp precision and entered the first room.
Inside were three beds, all of which were occupied by a rogue that was heavily sedated. That alone had me feeling deeply grateful.
Better still, I approached the first bed with heavy caution and examined their medical charts. What I noticed immediately was that even in their unconscious state, each rogue was breathing heavily-almost panting like an animal after a long run.

I glanced over at the monitor on the side and could scarcely believe my eyes. This man’s heart rate was so accelerated that it shouldn’t have been possible for him to be alive. Not to mention, there was absolutely nothing to show for his brain activity.
“It’s like you’re brain-dead,” I said quietly to myself. “No mental activity…It’s like you’re nothing but killing machines.”
From there, I went over to the next patient to find out that he was in the exact same state as the man before. Excessive heart rate and blood preasure, yet not a stitch of visible brain activity.
It was unfathomable. It truly made me question whether or not these rogues were even treatable in the first place. The thought was devastating.
