Chapter 125

Evelyn’s POV

I brushed the uncomfortable feeling off when I looked toward the door to find no one there. However, I did notice that it was cracked open a few inches when I could have sworn that I’d closed it before.

It’s nothing, Evelyn. You’re just imagining things.

I carefully placed all of my mother’s belongings back into the box and stored it under my side of the bed temporarily for safekeeping.

For a moment, I truly debated about changing into more suitable clothes.

I didn’t see the point in wasting any time while I was back home. Even though I wasn’t technically written into the work schedule down in the medical ward, I wasn’t going to let that stop me from lending a hand where it was most needed.

Quickly, I switched into my scrubs and began making my way down to the ward. I passed a few of my teammates, who were both glad and surprised to see me back so soon.

Since Kane had told me nearly nothing about the attack as far as casualties went, I really had no idea what awaited me beyond those metal doors.

Standing outside the main entrance were Kane and Henri. I immediately noticed the harsh lines that formed across Kane’s forehead, a look informing me that the man was deeply unsettled.

The two were locked in a rigorous conversation until Henri spotted me and gently nudged Kane’s shoulder. I kept my resolve in place while I approached them.

“Henri.”

“Luna,” he greeted with a slight bow. “Apologize for your trip getting cut short.”

“It’s alright,” I said evenly. “No one could have predicted that the rogues were going to attack last night. How many casualties occurred?”

His brows lifted while quickly glancing at Kane. The alpha let out a deflated snarl.

“Only a small handful of shopowners were caught up in the attack, trying to save their property from getting destroyed.”

His weary tone made me feel as though there was something more to be said.

I narrowed my eyes. “What is it? Henri, what aren’t you telling me?”

“Some of the rogues that we managed to bring in from last night, they’re…Not like the others we’ve recovered in the past.”

“What do you mean?”

Kane turned to fully face me with a dangerous look in his eyes. “These rogues are mindlessly feral!”

My whole body went stiff

“It’s true, Luna,” Henri confirmed. “We had to sedate each rogue that was brought in with a heavy tranquilizer just to ensure their transport. It’s like they’re stuck in their primal stage.

My heart slanimed against my chest. Well, this was certainly new. Of all the attacks I had been brought in to help aid, none of them were ever this severe. It made me truly wonder if my abilities were enough to still help them.

One way to find out…

Without another word, I turned on my heels and headed toward the doors. But before I could even wrap my hand around the handle, I felt the firm pull of Kane’s arm circle around my waist. He yanked me back, practically pulling me off my feet.

“Oh, no you don’t,” he snarled.

I flailed against his hold. “Kane,” I huffed. “Let ine go.

“Like hell. If you think I’m just going to let you walk into that ward, then you’ve proven to be far more foolish than I would ever have thought,” he growled.

“You cannot expect me to just ignore this, Kane!”

He held me firmly against his chest. “They’re too dangerous to be treated!”

“You don’t know that!” I shouted back with equal fervor. “Give me the chance to observe that for myself.”

“Not. Going. To. Happen.”

Henri gently cleared his throat, capturing both of our attention. It was then that I realized our little dispute had gathered a rather captivated audience.

Everyone who had been either working or walking past the area stopped and proceeded to stare at us with wide, unbelieving eyes. Out of the corner of my own vision, I noticed Diana and a few other teammates huddled nearby with flushed smirks on their faces.

A sudden feeling of bashfulness fluttered in my chest.

“Kane,” I muttered. “Put me down.”

I felt the bottoms of my feet hit the floor, and I took the chance to adjust my clothing back into place. Taking in a calm, controlled breath, I turned around to face him.

“While you may not want me anywhere near the new rogues, that doesn’t mean you can keep me from treating the other patients,” I said firmly. “As Luna, these are still my responsibilities, and I will not be pushed away from them.”

Kane’s expression was very loosely tempered with what little patience the man had left. But I was determined to stand my ground.

Kane took a long breath in and tipped his head downward to stare at me directly in the eyes.

“Let me make myself abundantly clear,” he began. “You are only permitted to work within the main rooms of the ward. No further. Wherever there are soldiers blocking doors, you are to stay away. Understand?”

I fought back the urge to argue further. “Fine,” I said.

Kane’s gaze lingered for a few seconds longer than expected before lowering to my lips. My heart jumped in my chest frantically. Having given everyone in the hallway such an emotional performance, it felt almost remiss not to have ended it with a kiss.

Had I wanted him to kiss me?

The thought was interrupted when Diana saddled up to my side and brushed my shoulder.

“Well, that was certainly a sight to behold,” she giggled. “I don’t think any of us have ever seen the alpha so expressive before. It’s sweet that he’s concerned for your safety, though.”

Yes, well, after a performance like that, I’m sure that no one would dare doubt the care and concern that Kane held for me. I wasn’t entirely sure whether to be glad or disheartened by it all.

“Diana, were you here last night when they were bringing the new rogues in?” I asked her.

She silently nodded. “Come on, I’ll tell you inside.”

We finally entered the medical ward and went straight over to collect our clipboards over by the rotation board. Diana glanced around to make sure that no one was near us to overhear.

“When they brought the rogues in, we all immediately sensed that something was off with them,” she explained. “They kept thrashing against the ropes they’d been bound with. Gnashing their jaws. But the real terror was in their eyes.”

“Their eyes?”

Diana shook her head in disbelief. “It was like nothing I’d ever seen. All of their eyes were glowing red.”

How interesting…

“Henri had mentioned something before about the rogues being stuck in their primal state,” I noted.

She nodded in agreement. “There’s no chance of talking to any of them. Each time the sedation wears off, it’s like they’re back to how they were originally brought in. Rabid.”

Indeed, it was almost unsettling how much my interest was piqued by all of this newly given information. I knew that the mere thought was utterly insane. But it was something I just had to do.

I needed to come back to the medical ward tonight when everyone else was gone. A plan was already forming in my mind.

This is going to be a huge risk, but it’s one that I’m willing to take.
