Chapter 124

“Sneaky, little wolf,” I said roughly.

As the early streaks of sunlight broke through the slits in the window shades, I gradually gathered my bearings and sat up. I wasted no time getting myself ready before heading down to the main hall.

“Good morning, Alpha Kane,” Marshall greeted. “The others are currently in the dining hall.”

“Thank you,” I said.

As I stood in the archway of the dining room, my eyes skimmed over the various women before spotting Evelyn at the end. She turned her head and sought me out as though she sensed my presence in the room.

She greeted me with a warm smile and gestured for me to come and join her. I happily accepted the mug of black coffee that she’d handed to me.

“Ah, Alpha Kane. I take it that your rooms were satisfactory,” Cheryl said curtly over the rim of her teacup.

“There were, indeed,” I answered formally with a slight head bow. “Thank you again for allowing me to stay the night.”

“Of course, I know my principles may come off as outdated, at times. Regardless, I made a promise to my best friend that I would look after her daughter when I am able to.”

She took another tentative sip. “Even if that same daughter has a difficult time following the rules,” she muttered dryly.

Evelyn practically choked on the piece of toast she’d been munching on. There was no chance of her covering the blush that took over her face. I couldn’t even hold back my own laughter, along with most of the group.

“And here I thought I was being careful,” Evelyn muttered.

Cheryl gave a knowing look and gently shook her head, playfully scolding her. “I told you. I know everything that goes on under my roof.”

Evelyn’s POV

Even though the weekend didn’t turn out the way that I had originally hoped, I was still glad to have had the chance to see everyone.

Cheryl made sure that my bags were brought out to Kane’s car. The box, however, that she gave me yesterday was placed directly into my hands.

“I figured you’d want to keep this close,” she said with a heart-warming smile.

I held the box close to my chest and held back the tears that threatened to blur my vision. “Thank you so much for giving this to me.”

Kane and I said our goodbyes and began making our way back to the house. His eyes were drawn to the box that sat in my lap.

“What’s that?”

“This is stuff that used to belong to my mother,” I told him. “Cheryl gave it to me. I haven’t even looked inside of it yet. I was thinking I’d go through everything once we got back,”

Kane offered a soft smile, and the rest of the ride was held in comfortable silence.

The moment the car pulled up to the house, it was like all hell had broken loose. Henri and a group of other soldiers were gathered by the door, waiting for Kane.

He helped me with my bags and told me he’d catch me up later on all the important information regarding the attack last night.

I had no problem heading straight to our room and unpacking my bags. I placed my clothes away and stowed my travel bag back into the closet before turning my attention to my mother’s box.

My heart thundered frantically in my chest as I lifted the lid off. “Oh, my Goddess,” I whispered.

Inside were small photographs, a few sentimental trinkets, and various pieces of jewelry that I could remember my mother once wearing when I was a child. My heart swelled with unspeakable joy.

It was like I was holding my own mother in my arms again.

But amidst the happiness of getting lost in the memories of this box, I had this strange feeling that someone was leering at me.
