Chapter 144

“Her heartbeat is terribly weak,” he said off-handedly. “Can you tell me what happened?”

Sadly, no. I couldn’t. That alone was proof of just how out of touch we were with one another at the moment.

I shamefully shook my head. “Honestly, no. The last time she and I really spoke was yesterday, and I only saw her briefly this morning. Apparently, she fell asleep for nearly twenty hours straight.”

The doctor’s eyes grew wide in disbelief, causing my stomach to twist into several knots.

“Oh my, well, let’s get her to one of the available cots,” he instructed. I carefully placed Evelyn down and stepped back to allow Dr. Borsheim to begin checking her other vitals through the monitor.

“Let’s see. It appears that both her heart rate and her blood pressure have severely dropped.”

“But why?” I couldn’t understand it. How could her health take such a drastic downturn in only the span of a day? He rubbed his chin in thought. “It is rather strange, but not unheard of. Evelyn is still undergoing the process of healing her wolf. Not to mention, there’s her ability to miraculously heal them that needs to be taken into account.”

My heart jumped in my chest. “Evelyn’s been personally treating the feral rogues,” I noted. “Do you think that could have any bearing on what’s been going on?”

“It’s certainly not something to rule out. Is there anyone who could account for her time when she’s treating these patients?”

I summoned Henri to get a hold of the soldier who was responsible for watching over Evelyn. When he came into the room, I watched his expression fill with panic as soon as he saw Evelyn lying on the cot.

“Oh my God,” he said. “It happened again.”

It took every last ounce of my self-control to not pin this soldier against the wall and tear his throat out. “What do you mean? ‘Again’?” I questioned through clenched teeth.

“Luna Evelyn made me promise not to tell anyone about her symptoms when treating the feral rogues.

“What sort of symptoms?” Dr. Borsheim inquired.

“It drains her,” he confessed. “The longer she sits with each patient, the more it takes out of her. By the time she’s finished, Evelyn is nearly too weak to stand up on her own. Believe me, sir, I wanted to tell you but-” “It’s alright,” I said tensely. “You may leave us.”

I pressed my hands to my face and let out a mangled breath. “Why the hell didn’t she say anything?”

“Because I refused to properly acknowledge it,” Evelyn said weakly. I snapped my head around to find her barely awake. Her eyes were struggling to stay open as she spoke. “I’m fine anyway.”

“Like hell,” I scoffed.

Evelyn hardly had the strength to pass me a proper glare, Yet she still tried to push herself off the cot. Both the doctor and I jumped to her side and pressed her back down.

I was so furious at her, my damn hands were shaking. However, I knew there was no chance of hashing out anything with her, Not when she was in the middle of hopefully recovering.

“Evelyn, as of right now, I’m placing you under strict bedrest,” Dr. Borsheim said sternly.

“What? No, that’s not-”

“I’m going to have to insist,” he said. He turned to me. “Now, as for you, I’m highly suggesting that you stay with Evelyn during this time. As you know, one of the most crucial things that would keep her wolf stable would be to remain close to her mate.”

I nodded easily and thanked him.

Dr. Borsheim stepped out, leaving the two of us to face our problems head-on.

The room had fallen so eerily quiet, one could have heard a pin hit the floor.

“I’m ordering for those feral rogues to be executed.”
