Chapter 143

Alexander’s POV

I hastily caught Evenlyn in my hands as I watched her collapse in front of me. My heart jumped into my chest as her eyes rolled into the back of her head.

I carefully adjusted her in my arms, making sure her head stayed resting against my shoulder. I swept under her knees, lifting her off the floor entirely.

“Evie?” Nothing. I tried shaking her a little. “Evelyn!” But still nothing.

She was completely out cold. I cursed under my breath. I knew something was wrong when I spoke to her yesterday. I’d never seen her so pale. So sickly.

Growing up, Evelyn wasn’t exactly prone to falling ill. I knew that her wolf had never truly been strong. But this… This was something else entirely.

My first thought was to rush her to the medical ward. She needed help. Immediately.

Just as I turned on my heels, I saw Kane standing in the doorway of the dining hall. His eyes were transfixed on the woman I held firmly against my chest.

Kane’s eyes filled with unspeakable anger when he realized that it was me. Good.

I fought back the urge to smirk at the bastard, knowing that my presence in Evelyn’s life had gotten well under his skin. It didn’t matter if she ever ended up telling Kane about my confession to her.

Kane had to have realized that his so-called relationship with Evelyn was nothing compared to the lifetime friendship that she and I have.

The other alpha clenched his jaw and stalked right up to me with the intention of taking Evelyn from my arms. I felt my eyes flash and stepped back.

“Give her to me,” he ordered tensely.

“I don’t think so,” I refused. “How is it that you failed to see there was something clearly wrong with her?”

His gaze dropped to Evelyn’s unconscious form. I could feel the small tremors wracking through her body. A slight sheen of sweat started to dot her forehead.

“She’s my wife,” he growled.

I returned his sneer. “Yeah, maybe on paper. But it’s certainly nothing more beyond that,” I said coldly.

The air around us grew lethal. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“Your little intimate act might be fooling everyone else, but not me,” I clarified.

Kane narrowed his eyes at me, “What goes on between Evelyn and me is none of your goddamn business.”

“It ought to be for the way you treat her. To you, Evelyn is nothing more than a means to an end, isn’t she?”

“I don’t have to explain a fucking thing to you,” he spat. “Now, hand her over so that she can receive the help she

needs.”

I didn’t want to. Part of me feared that if I handed Evelyn over to this mockery of a husband that I would never see her alive again. But Kane was already hooking his hands under her legs and lifting her out of my arms.

“Don’t presume to know everything about our relationship,” he said darkly. “You certainly don’t know everything about me.”

Kane’s POV

Had it not been for the fact that I was holding Evelyn in my arms, I would have taken a swing at that goddamn prince. Naturally, there was zero chance of that going down well with his father.

Who the fuck did he think he was?

The moment I got Evelyn into my hands, I made off like a madman down the corridor toward the medical ward. As I passed the main office area, I called into the doorway.

“Dr. Borsheim!”

The older man came rushing from his cubicle. His eyes instantly dropped to the lifeless figure I had in my arms. His features filled with worry for the woman he’d been treating for the last handful of months.

Dr. Borsheim gently reached out to check Evelyn’s pulse.
