Chapter 142

But what if something came up and that time frame had to be extended? Within the blink of an eye, that ‘one year’ would turn into five, or even ten.

A decade trapped in a loveless marriage with a man who would never want me. Never willing to kiss me because he wanted to. Never hold me at night when it was just the two of us in our shared bedroom.

It came as no surprise that I was beginning to feel deeply drained by the time I finished with the second patient. By the late afternoon, I was exhausted and feeling equally as terrible as I was the day before.

This time, the soldier actually had to help me move to one of the available chairs out in the hallway. I was just grateful that there wasn’t anyone nearby to see me in such a weakened state.

“Luna.” The soldier’s gaze filled with pure concern. “You can’t possibly claim that whatever is going on is nothing to worry about. Is it the treatment?”

I willfully held up a hand to calm him down. “I believe it is because of their feral state that they require an extended amount of time with my abilities.”

“But they seem to be draining rather fast, no?” he prompted.

That was true. I could understand if I ended up treating five rogues and feeling this poorly. However, I could barely make it through two treatments before I was ready to collapse.

Something else was going on. And I was afraid it had to do with the pain I felt in my chest.

I was determined to fight against the exhaustion this time around. I wasn’t sure how long I spent sitting there, but when I glanced at the clock on the wall, I saw that it was half past six.

Damn.-

There was no chance I could possibly skip dinner twice in a row. With all my available strength, I pulled myself up and steadied my balance.

Most of the ward had cleared out, which gave me the opportunity to straighten myself out before making the daring attempt to head to the communal dining hall.

Diana spotted me the moment I arrived. She waved me down and eagerly placed a full plate of food in front of me. “I took the liberty of fixing you a plate in hopes that you’d show up.

My cheeks flushed with gratitude, “Thank you,” I said.

Unfortunately, ever since this pain around my heart appeared, my hunger had evaded me. I picked up the fork and merely pushed the food around.

Good God, I’m so tired, I thought.

I couldn’t let my eyes close, I knew that if I did, I was going to pass out.

“Hello, sweetheart,” Kane hummed from beside me. His playful tone did nothing for my strained nerves. “How nice of you to join us this evening.”

I flickered my eyes to find him smirking down at me. Hearing him use that damn pet name made my stomach churn. I couldn’t even bring myself to respond.

“Evelyn?” Diana’s voice filled with growing worry. “Are you alright?”

I took in a shaky breath. My vision started to blur. “I…I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I don’t think I’m feeling well.’

My insides were on fire. I quickly got up from the table and took long, meaningful strides out of the dining hall. I stole a quick glance over my shoulder to see Kane watching me with an exasperated look.

A broken sound tore from my throat. Just as I turned my head forward, I accidentally ended up walking straight into someone. A strong pair of hands caught me by my waist.

“Evie?”

“A-Alexander,” I slurred. My vision tunnels, and before I could get another word out, my legs gave out beneath

My world went dark.
