Chapter 154

Evelyn’s POV

I tried to ignore the fluttering sensation that settled into my lower abdomen each time I shifted in Kane’s lap. The whole act felt rather silly. However, there was no denying the positive effect that his touch transferred to me while I was working.

Not a single moment while I was treating any of the rogues did I feel drained or tired. It was as though his

presence-or rather his wolf’s presence acted as some kind of stabilizing agent.

It was almost soothing. As I felt my own abilities transfer into the patient, his touch restored what I was losing. I felt strangely balanced.

On the contrary, while administering my ability to invoke their vitals and brain activity, I found myself fighting a new struggle of my own. Arousal.

Thank Goddess, I was facing away from him. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to hide the physical reaction he had over me. My face turned beet red, my mouth went dry, and my hands possessed a slight

tremor.

Behind me, I heard Kane take in several deep, combative breaths as if he were fighting his own instincts. But his hands never drifted from where he’d initially placed them.

“I…I can show you the marks I found,” I offered weakly.

Instead of letting me get up, Kane merely shifted forward to peer over my shoulder, while I pulled back the patient’s shirt collar. All the air caught in my lungs. There wasn’t an ounce of space left between us.

I felt every ridge and muscle of his body pressed into my back. His woodsy scent flooded my senses, making me feel delirious.

“Yes,” he said gruffly. “Have you any idea what it was that they’d been injected with?” he asked.

I shook my head. “Not yet. Based on the blood reports, there were traces of some sort of narcotic, but I just know there’s something else there that we’re missing.”

“Spend some time down in the archives. I’m sure there’s bound to be some books and even files on what could be missing,” he suggested.

“I think that’s a good idea!” Just as I turned my head to glance at him, I felt the plush press of his lips against the corner of my mouth. I immediately froze.

My heart hammered frantically in my chest. Oh, Goddess. I hadn’t meant for that to happen. As I tried to pull away, Kane brought his hand to the back of my neck, holding me firmly in place.

He slightly adjusted his position and captured my lips in a masterful kiss. Every nerve ending in my body sizzled amongst the crackling heat that spread throughout me.

Oh my…

This, obviously, wasn’t the first time he and I had shared a kiss. But it certainly never felt like this before. Maybe it was because for the first time since we’ve known each other, it was real.

Kane pulled me back; his gaze sweeping over my flushed complexion. He smiled. “Come on, you’ve done enough for tonight.”

Over the days that followed, his words never stopped circling around in my mind. “Let me show you that what I’m feeling is real.”

Kane was determined to prove himself, and so he had. He came to visit me numerous times while I was down in the medical ward doing my usual rounds. He proceeded to help me search through the pack’s archives in search of any useful material I could use on the case study.

And if that wasn’t enough, Kane would take any possible opportunity to let his hand rest on my hip. He’d occasionally place a small kiss on either my head or my cheek, not caring who was around to see it.

And every night, right as I’m about to fall asleep, he’d steal another kiss. It had become our new nightly routine, and I never wanted it to end.

I’d become utterly captivated by this unforeseen side of the man. Who would have thought that Kane possessed such a sweet and compassionate side? Not me. Certainly not when we first met each other.

But now? I wanted to be around him any chance I got.

That particular evening, he and I were down in the archives surrounded by piles of various old books and

tombs.

I offered a small smile. “You know you don’t need to be down here,” I said softly. “I’m sure you’ve got a pile of paperwork on your desk that requires your attention. Plus, there’s the two inches of dust that you surely don’t need to be inhaling.”

Kane chuckled and shook his head. “It’s alright. There was actually something that I wanted to talk to you about.”

My stomach did a slight swoop as I placed my book down to give him my full attention.

“What is it?”

“There is a formal gathering this coming weekend. The guest list is mainly alphas of smaller neighboring packs, all of whom want to discuss what actions need to be taken as a precaution for the upcoming battle with the rogues,” he explained.

I nodded my head. “I see.”

“And, what I’m trying to say is that I want you there with me,” he said.

I raised my brows. “Really?”

“Absolutely,” he confirmed with a growing smile. “For all the work and effort you’ve been putting in to help everyone, I couldn’t imagine attending this meeting without you by my side.”

My heart soared in my chest. I eagerly nodded. “Yes, Kane. I would happily attend this gathering with you.”

I gave my research another hour before retiring to my room. Now that I had this upcoming gathering on my mind, I swiftly dove into my closet to ensure that I had something appropriate to wear.

Considering it wasn’t technically meant to be a joyous occasion, I decided to keep things simple. I took out two different floor-length gowns. The first was a dark maroon shade, and the second was a dark navy blue shade.

From there, I crossed over toward my mother’s jewelry box to find a special piece I could wear for the occasion. I found a pair of teardrop diamond earrings that would go perfectly with either dress.

I couldn’t help but feel dejected over not being able to find my mother’s will. With everything that’s gone on, I was forced to push this to the back of my mind.

But suddenly, I was reminded of something that Cheryl had said in our last phone call. “Your mother had a flair for hidden places and illusions.”

My brows drew together as I glanced down at the jewelry box. Apart from the stunning pieces within it, I hadn’t taken any real notice of the intricate design that was at the bottom of the box.

The tip of my finger followed the viny pattern, leading me to the center of the design of a silver star. Instinctively, I pressed down on the shape and heard a distinctive ‘click’ give way.

Suddenly, the bottom of the wooden box gave way. I let out a sharp gasp as I better lifted the top half up to see what had been hiding within the inner lining of the box. A thin stack of papers.

“Holy shit,” I whispered.

My eyes were instantly drawn to the underlined title at the top of the packet.

‘Last Will and Testament’.
