Chapter 156

I was so tempted to tell him about what I had just discovered. I wanted to. The thought of there being secrets between us felt so wrong and went against everything we were trying to build.

Yet at the same time, I didn’t want to place this kind of pressure on him. Not now. Not when there was a war on the horizon.

I shook my head, not knowing how to answer.

But Kane refused to let the matter go. He lifted his hand to cup my cheek and gave me an imploring look that threatened to melt me on the spot.

“I…” Another horrible shudder wracked through me, knowing I couldn’t speak the truth. “I’m just worried

about the upcoming war.”

I hesitated to glance back at him, not knowing if my excuse was truly convincing. I hated the fact that I was keeping something so vital from him.

Kane’s expression softened with assured confidence as he pulled me closer. He wrapped his strong arms around me and held me firmly to his chest.

“You have nothing to be worried about,” he said.

“Don’t I?” I countered back. “Part of me feels good for being able to help in the medical ward and on the case study. I feel like it’s the least I can do when my wolf isn’t fully developed.”

Kane pulled back to stare at me with a look of befuddled disbelief. “The least you can do’? Where is this coming from?” he prodded. “Evelyn, surely you understand that no one else in this entire pack, myself included, is able to treat patients the way that you can.”

I merely shrugged.

“And, as far as the case study goes, if it hadn’t been for your keen observation, we may have never known about these mysterious injections. Can’t you see that it’s because of you that we have a higher

chance at winning his war?”

“I suppose,” I muttered.

This wasn’t my attempt to try and gain any sort of favor or fish for compliments. I was genuinely concerned when it came to my physical abilities in terms of defense. With every training session, I knew that we were one step closer to facing off against the enemy.

My throat grew dry. “I just… What if I’m not strong enough? Fast enough? What if I end up letting everyone down-hmnf!”

Kane stole the words out of my mouth with one swift kiss. Things quickly grew heated as he brought his hands down to grab the back of my thighs. He lifted my feet off the ground and carried me over to the

bed.

Gently, he lay me down and loomed over me while bracing his own weight on his arms. I was caged in, but I didn’t mind in the slightest. With round eyes, I stared up at the man who had found a way to set my blood ablaze.

“You listen to me,” he began roughly. His eyes glowed bright. “Don’t ever doubt yourself when it comes to your capabilities, understand? Since the day you arrived here, you’ve done nothing but dedicate yourself to this pack to ensure its well-being and success. You’ve been training harder than any of the other soldiers in my ranks. Look at how far you’ve come.”

My eyes glazed over with tears. “Kane,” I whispered.

“If after all that, you still truly believe that you’re not capable of defending yourself or anyone else, then please trust that I will do everything in my power to protect you.”

My heart shattered with a mixture of pure devotion and utter desolation. Here, this man was promising me protection, and I felt like I was returning it with deceit.

“Okay,” I said weakly. “I trust you.”
